I'm affraid I can't help you in a reasonable amount of time. What I know of these watches is that they aren't very rare nor valuable. The 'railroad' thing is something of a gimmick. It's supposed to give the watch an air of accuracy with isn't backed at all. Back in the times they were sold these watches cost no more than 10 dollars. But perhaps another member can help you out

I am pretty sure my man Frans is spot on, but Pat (maccars) is a real expert in these types of models. Hopefully he will chime in.
BTW/ welcome to TRF, glad to have you at the funhouse.

I have two Waltham watches from my father. I know he couldn't afford much, so I am guessing they are not overly valuable.
Still a good keepsake. BTW, both mine still work, without ANY maintenance on them.

I'll echo the others - Welcome to TRF! You'll love it here - great folks. And then, maybe some great watches! Your pics aren't much help. What I need is for you to open the back cover, and copy everything printed or engraved on the movement, such as names, jewel counts, adjustment figures, etc., and post them here. Do this also for the inside of the back cover. Your watch looks to be a open face case with a hunting case movement (the winding stem/crown is located at the 3:00 position); it could very possibly be that the movement is not in the original case. Also, the railroad heritage is somewhat suspect, in that most railroad companies required watches with arabic hour markers, rather than Roman numerals. This isn't absolute, however; some Roman dials were approved for RR service. Keep in mind that a true railroad grade watch was produced to a greater standard than other watches of the time. Incredible accuracy was required, and the RR grade manufacturers charged more for that type of watch. Unfortunately, a lot of folks believe they have a "railroad" watch simply because of printing on the dial and/or engraving on the case. The proof of this pudding will be in the markings on the inside of the case and on the movement itself. Just post this information, or get a really good clear photo for me to examine. Again, welcome. I look forward to seeing your watch movement. |

Pat IS the man regarding pocket watches, particularly RR grade.
Thanks for chiming in, Pat, and come around more often. You're missed. |

I've been super busy around here for the past couple of months, and that has intruded into my forum time. Glad to be back to help. How's the winter up there? BTW, Dadan - "HW Co." is more likely to be "Hampden Watch Company", than to be Waltham. But until I can examine the markings, all I'm doing is guessing. It's been a bizarre winter, weather-wise up here. We go from a few days of temps around 0C and then it plunges to the -20C range for a week and back up again. In one 24 hour period the temperature plunged over 30C! Plus we get a wicked snowstorm, followed by freezing rain (coating everything in ice) and then sunshine for a few days, followed by warm tempertures and loads of rain. But hey, the groundhog saw his shadow so spring is just around the corner, right? |
