Choice: Platinum Daytona or.....

If you could have a Platinum Daytona, or a number of watches for the same value, which way would you go?

I could sell my watches and get a Platona but to me I don't really have a watch that I must have over everything (grail), I like a bit of variety.

If it's only one or others, I'd opt for the variety especially taking into account vintage pieces. For me those are must-haves, so in this hypothetical scenario apparently no Platona for me!

For the money, I'd go for two or three very special vintage pieces.

Over the last several years, I have pared down my collection to effectively three watches that I wear (I have a 4th that I am hanging on to given it marked a professional milestone.) The Platona is one of the three watches. The others are a PP 5712/1a and a SDc. If I had to narrow it down further, I think the Platona and the SDc make a perfect pairing and would meet all needs and satisfy all occasions (dressy or casual.) And if I could only have one, it would be the Platona, hands down.

So, depending on what your "number" means in your original post, I would shrink the number of watches and go for the Platona given the chance. Once you start wearing the Platona, it will dominate your wrist time.

I would rather have more pieces, you can have one hell of a collection for the price of one Platona. I have never tried on a Platona as I am scared I too would want to sell it all to get one.

I'd go with the Platona as I consider it a "grail" piece. Nothing wrong being a one watch type of guy; actually I think its ideal.

Platona is a perfect watch IMO. It can be worn with a suit or jeans and its an absolute GEM!

You can have a nice car for the price of a Platona (Retail at AD in Houston is $75,000)... I put one on, big mistake because it's all I thought about for a few days after. Why not a WG or RG Daytona and an SD4K? I guess that question is my answer, go for variety. With a Platona budget the variety need not be limited to SS.

I get that people would like some variety but as nyc2la stated, how could you say "yeah, leaving the Platona home today" I have a BLNR and if I had both I cant imagine saying I will wear the BLNR today.

For me, once I got the Platona really lost interest in all other watches. Every time I have another watch on I ask myself why am I wearing this and LEAVING THE PLATONA AT HOME??? Just makes no sense to me to wear other watches at all


I have kept and still enjoy my collection, the Platona, however, if able to obtain, makes you forget your other watches anyway!! So, YES I would do what it takes to get it!!!



I think the consensus here however is the more the merrier so keep a variety, only you will know what is best for you

This is what worries about getting a Platona.

I enjoy my little collection of watches but I worry that if I get a Platona it will dominate and I won't enjoy the others so much!

It's a bit catch 22. I'm getting older and I suspect that if I don't get one I'll regret it, but if I do get one I might regret it because of what I have said above!

Go with the Platona and then get a few moderate priced pieces or pre-owned to round out your collection.

Well, honestly that is what happened to me!! But everyone's different!

Yeah, leaving the Platona at home is tough to do.

For the OP, expounding on the "all occasions" I wrote earlier, I usually will wear the SDc if I go to the beach or on a similar-type (i.e. active) vacation and the Platona most other times. These two watches pack a great 1-2 punch. Good luck!

Well, you could get a PP Nautilus 5711 and a platinum FPJourne. Depending on how you work it out, you might even squeeze in a DJ or OP...

Or, a PP 5711, an FPJ Chronometre Bleu, and a steel Daytona, plus some change?

Or a platinum DD40, plus a Sub-C, plus change.

There are a lot of options.

That is a very tough call. This is my current collection and I love every one of them. Upon Dr. Tom's enabling, I bought the Smurf last January and it gets the most wrist time by far. However, the others do find their way into the rotation occasionally. I'm afraid that when (99% sure not an if) I get the Platona, it and the Smurf will dominate wrist time. There is just something about the heft and feel of those watches that I can't explain. Those that have one know exactly what I'm talking about. It's something you just have to experience to know.

X2. Got to try on the platinum Daytona the other night and it made me forget about many watches. An hour later a had the Datograph on, forgot all about the Platona. Both killer watches though.

Been there and while I love Lange, there's really no better value in PM watches than Rolex.
