New member. Which Submariner to buy?
Greetings all,
New member here :) I'm a 30 year old and currently own a number of watches. Not a collector as such, but have accumulated some less prestige brands like Cartier, and Hermes over the years. Currently exploring Subs, and looking at buying my first. Need some advice. I'm torn between these two models: - 116610 LN / Stainless Steel Date / Black Dial ($11,000) - 116613 LN / 2-Tone (Gold/SS) / Black Dial / Black & Yellow Bezel ($17,000). Not sure about anywhere else, though there is a current supply and demand issue in Australia with a 1+ year waiting list on the 116610 model nation wide. It is apparent, the 116613 is available and not as "in demand". My question is the $6K price difference worth it? Also.. I'm no fashion guru but is the two-tone with gold less appealing in the sense it looks more formal or too flashy and breaks the best of both worlds? I work an office job, and weekends I like very summer casual wear... shorts/t-shirt and prefer to remain low key. Will the 116613 style look out of place? Resale value? Any advice appreciated. Cheers |

Not telling you what to buy, but I was in cairns (watches of Switzerland) they had a SubC and a two tone sub on display last week, currently in singpoare/Thailand/Hong kong and there IS NOT a supply issue here...
Best of luck with your decisions, it's a great decision to have make, enjoy the process... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Welcome to the forum.
Personally I don't think a TT sub is too dressy for casual shorts/t-short attire. I see a lot of people here wearing the TT Sub in that form, but I see more of the blue dial version than black, not that it really matters. However, you cannot go wrong with the black 116610, ever. It's arguably the most versatile piece Rolex has going. It has the non-polished center links, which I much prefer over polished and/or gold center links, simply because the ease of scratching those center links and the visibility once it happens really bothers me. I've had several Subs over the years and not a one of them has been a TT model, although I am getting closer to pulling the trigger on one with a blue dial. Currently I own a 16610 Sub date and a 16600 Sea Dweller, but have had both the 14060m and the 114060.

I didn't know the blue dial was available in the TT sub. Its actually very striking, and will be looking into this model as well :)

Assuming you like the 116610 better, for the price differential, you could hop a plane to an area where inventory isn't an issue - then you get a watch and a little trip out of the deal.
Good luck with whichever you select. |

I'm going overseas next month, but didn't occur to me to stop by HK or Singapore .... my options are limited as I have to forfeit me and the wifes business class fare in order to change destinations. So out of the question. |

Called other AD's in SG, mainly the ones on Orchard road... sounds like a luxury shopping district. However in comparison to the airport their prices are the same. The 116613LB is $1000 more ($18,070 SGD) |

Get the one you want to put on your wrist every morning..
Stainless Steel seems to be the watch-of-choice probably because of the casual lifestyles of today. I will say though, the TT Sub black is possibly the best looking and most striking watch that Rolex has ever produced..

This...I will say that I have had my TT Black Sub since 2002 and have never felt that it was "too much" for any occasion be it formal or casual.
As stated by most it really boils down to what you want to put on your wrist every day...can't go wrong with either decision. Good luck in your search and welcome here... Quote:

Between thise two I'd go steel, but if it were the 116613LB I'd go blue sunburst all day long.
Also look into the Hulk if you like green. |

The TT Bluesy is probably the best looking sports watch Rolex offers. In fact, it was my first Rolex. For me though, it was too much in between. I ended up with a SubC ND and a YG SubC..... along with a few more!
Good luck. |

For a one and only, SubC. For weekend, I prefer LB.

I'd go stainless. I don't know if the trusted sellers ship to Australia but people like Govberg's Jewelers do. I'm not an expert but I think because of a trade agreement between the U.S. and Australia there isn't a tariff. The AD's may not be able to ship a new watch but I'd suggest a barely used one anyway. I know the AUD is weak but if you're talking $11k AUD I think you can get a lot for that. Also, the overseas route would allow you to get what you like. I personally have a TT that I bought in '06 but if I was buying today I'd buy SS. Re: holding value. The SS models are currently doing better.

If I were to only have one watch it would be the TT black dialed sub. It is so versatile. From a swim suit to a dress suit the watch looks good. The choice is yours. Happy hunting.

While I like the new subs, there has been a lot of chatter about people who really appreciate the older style. Hollow links and stamped clasp for the weight.
Is there a way you can try both on? If you are going to get a watch, might as well get the one you really like. If you go older style, you will save a good chunk of money too. Either way you will have at least explored all options with no regrets. |

I did indeed :) funny thing is they didn't open till 1.30pm. You were right though... surprisingly they have one stainless steel sub with no date. Not what I'm after, as more keen for the latest. They further don't have any TT.. I didn't question further on this matter.
Appreciate the tip once again! |

Welcome to the forum! It's necessary to see both on your wrist before making a decision. I wore several TT Rolex everywhere and with everything and enjoyed the experience. Good luck and enjoy the chase!
