Shouldn't all high end sport watches be like this?
I am not a huge VC fan, but one thing I do like with their new overseas collection is that you can go between bracelet, rubber or leather strap without problem.
It gets really tiring when you put 20-30K in a sports watch and the manufacturer does everything in his power to prohibit you changing anything, if you get a Nautilus on bracelet it is impossible to put a strap, and vice versa, , even Rolex does it, when I got my Daytona RG on strap I asked and was told that it was impossible to put a bracelet on it because of the different lug width, they are becoming very boring with this, I would love when I get my 5712 to be able to go from bracelet to rubber, even to leather if I want to, how long will brands play this little game of limiting the possibilities of making the watch like you want and when you want… Here's a pic of the VC where you have the 3 possibilities |

agree! its great to have that choice. Thats why I love the speedmaster, simple to go between bracelet/strap/nato.
One negative about this is that it has to be a VC strap that you'd have to use because of the notch. Still a great idea and innovation. |

Depends how you look at watches. If they're art, you can't make this point any more than you can fault Hemingway for not writing chose your own adventures or Chopin for now letting you whistle along to his ballades. If you see them as purely functional, I agree to a point, but it seems bad business for these companies to allow you to radically change a watch rather than buy two.

It’s not their idea and innovation – Cartier patented the idea back in 1994, and as both VC and IWC are also Richemont Group owned, they are permitted use of the patent to make their own variant.
It’ll be interesting to see what the rest of the industry does post-2019 in this respect. As for being stuck with VC being the sole supplier of straps – yes on the rubber, but any good custom strapmaker should be able to re-use the leather strap’s insert, if you fancied something different than OE. |

I agree customer should have the options to choose the strap. I don't think it is a good idea to include all the options as the price will increase because the cost of additional strap will build in.

I like the new overseas, I am a little sad to see the big date go on the chrono though.
The strap options are pretty nice however. |

PP Aquanaut 5167 is interchangeable with the rubber strap and bracelet.
And that's one of my favorite VC's if not my favorite. |

Love the idea of the swappable straps. Also it now has an in-house movement and a clear case back so you can see it. I'm eager to see one in person.

I do like owners having an option vs factory enforced bans on different straps/bracelets.
I wouldn't be so sure about the VC's attachment robustness for a sports watch that might get torqued under strenuous activity. That narrow center connection just looks less capable to me vs full width end links. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Let's see here... a completely proprietary strap system that locks you into the manufacturer's options and has a connection that looks about 5 mm wide.
Yes, that's much better than having normal full-width lugs. :P |

True, they are one of the few high end brands which do it, and god for them Quote:
can't imagine wearing my ceramic diver other than on rubber but when I get back my 5712 would love to go from rubber to bracelet, but no... Quote:
I don't agree, they just did for the straps IMO, always thought I might get an overseas in blue with big date, chrono or dual time, but nope... Quote:
Because it's THE icon and must be only on bracelet, I think it's the reason Quote:

I just said that being able to switch is nice, didn't say the 5mm wide or being locked to the manufacturer, but it's almost always the case if you want quality, was a good thing... |

Well...liked the new VC designs. Pretty spendy for what you get, but one of the "Holy Trinity" of watchmaking does not come cheap.
The strap connection looks a bit tenuous, but I hope they know what they're doing. Panerai sure seems to spur a strap economy. Not sure 3rd parties will rush to support a lower volume watch like VC tho. |

You can also have same trivet rubber, bracelet and leather so to speak in Breguet Marine Series as well
To VC's credit, you don't need any small tool to change the strap that's a very neat feature hoping it wouldn't comprise the watch's integrity when diving or doing some activities

I totally agree but sadly not all companies play along. In fact my old VC 49140 is bracelet only. So I get around this by purchasing multiple watches. I keep a couple on bracelets, a couple on leather, and a couple on rubber straps. The WIS workaround.
