Are TRF polls useful or useless?
Just hearing on the news today that the postmortem into the UK election opinion polls says key groups were underrepresented in surveys. Basically the polls got it completely wrong, as one party triumphed.
Ok not to get political but this got me thinking(It does happen, but not often) I want to know what you think about the polls here on TRF, there are quite a lot of them, do I buy this watch or this. Does the OP actually pay attention to the outcome? Do these polls actually tell us anything we don't know? (yes the sub is the most popular Rolex) Do you enjoy these polls? Let me know what you think. |

Its nice having polls but there always so close in terms of outcome that it really doesn't help the person that much.
Also a lot of the time people are looking for reviews, reasoning and why behind a question. When i was trying to choose between watches i only listen to the people who gave me a reasoning or why they choose that decision. And not someone who just say "get the DD".

It is knowledge. However most polls are based on opinions not facts. Depends if it's an opinion or fact poll...

For me, polls are just for fun to see which one TRF'ers like more (which dial color, case size and so on). Ultimately I make the final decision whether it's a popular choice or not.

Useful. As example I was curious to know how many Subs members here own and I used a poll to find out. Interesting numbers were revealed at least for me.

I tend to think that few people - in a decision situation - are totally undecided/neutral or open to persuasion based on rational argument.
When friends ask my opinion, I am aware that they often have a strong existing bias and are looking for someone to play 'Devil's Advocate' for them - which is perfectly reasonable and sensible. 'Other opinions' (Polls) are most useful when it is possible to access 'expert knowledge' that you did not have yourself. "Popular opinion" is of no interest to me.

A true TRF-er would ask for the 'Both' option

Generally a poll is a bit of fun, but we all have members here who we respect or even consider friends and their opinions are always valued.

There is a sway to most of these polls in favor of Rolex obviously. I enjoy reading the responses.

A few weeks ago I started a poll and I gave the audience four 39mm choices. One of the people that responded sent me a link to a short video of his Hulk. Three days later I went out and I bought one.
So I will say that they can be useful if the person that starts it is really seeking answers. Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

Both I suppose.
TRF polls are entirely useless as far as outcomes being representative (or those responding being a reliable cross-section) of what the larger Rolex-buying world's buyers and owners think. 100% self-selected (a big, scientific polling no-no) on multiple levels and using no sampling methodology whatsoever renders them 100% useless as far as extrapolating the outcome and using it as predictor or measure of anything outside the bounds of the even smaller sub-group of TRF members who selected the particular "poll" question to answer. Whether a TRF poll-maker values the collective opinion of a tiny, self-selected sampling of responders within a small, self-selected internet forum group that itself has a mostly ever-changing, transient cast of enthused, active participants who happen to get online and see question and care enough to answer before the thread is bumped downwards and onto Page 2,3 --> oblivion is entirely up to them. If the TRF pollster is using a poll to simply generate written, persuasive opinions about this or that then it's more of a sounding board exercise and there's really no need to cast it as a "poll" at all. A simple question will do as there's no real need or reason to collect so-called "poll" numbers. On the other hand, it's sort of fun to just click on stuff. |

Polls are USELESS.
Unless Paul's involved.

Are TRF polls useful or useless?
I think they are...
I just tested a POLL to see what others would do when buying two different cars and the majority of TRF Members voted to do what I ending up doing. POLL http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=453844 Results of POLL http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=454031

As always it depends on how the question is worded and what answers are allowed

A well designed poll on TRF could say something valid about those who actually answer the poll.
However, I don't think I've ever seen a poll on TRF that was well done. Polling is a science and there are all kinds of variables that must be considered to control for bias, for instance. Honestly, the average person has no interest in controlling for bias even if he knew how. Let's just say that TRF polls can be fun. Sent from my SM-G900V

lies , damned lies , and statistics , but why are we picking on the Polish folk in our midst , far better to pick on estate agents or lawyers , infact , tax men would be higher on my list ...
messing aside , i think the polls are interesting , im often in the minority , but i find that interesting too. fter all its only a bit of fun. |

I'm sorry. I obviously didn't read far enough. I thought we were discussing board polls.
Still, any poll is only as good as its design and execution and even then it's only a snapshot in time. Sent from my SM-G900V
