Rolex Culture...21st Century

ventured into the city the other day & wandered into an AD store just to kill some time between appointments.

how times have changed...there were two women customers trying to decide which men's model Rolex to buy. one was considering a two-tone Datejust & the other was torn between the SS Daytona or an 18K President. the salesperson was more than happy to assist them citing that actresses 'Jen' wears this one, 'Cameron' wears that one & 'Sofia' prefers the Daytona.

while this observation runs along the lines of 'to each his/her own' it was somewhat entertaining to note that both women looked like high-end/high maintenance fashionistas...along with their red-soled stilettos, each wanted the watch bracelets to dangle loosely alongside their other bracelets.

which got me to thinking/wondering...is this a temporary fashion trend or the wave of the future? if it's for real, then the production schedulers at Rolex can probably cut down on the manufacturing of conventional ladies models. if it's strictly a trend, then there will probably be some nice Rolexes on the 'previously-owned' market a few years from now, barring any scratches from other bracelets worn concurrently.

used to be Paul Newman & Steve McQueen models as Rolexes were primarily a man's endeavor/interest...now we have Rolex models associated with lousy actresses.

I like to see Rolexes on people's wrists, no matter the gender or the style.

These watches have just become status symbols, like it or not.

So if you are going to be conspicous might as well go big or go home ya?

No women wants a 26mm on their wrist so they can't been seen.

Love it... I joke with my Lady saying she is "high maintenance". She doesn't find it as funny as me.

She wears my DJ and Ex I 36mm. They are the perfect size for her.

You should have walked up to them and asked "do your husbands know you're here?" I'm sure it would have went over nicely.

The salesperson was just being a good salesperson by attempting to relate his product to potential buyers.

If the salesperson saw an old fart at the store, ....he would probably talked about Paul Newman & Steve McQueen? etc etc.

Exactly. He was trying to make a connection with them. If it was a male customer he would've used another tactic.

IMHO, when a female wants to be fashionista and hipster when going casual, then by all means go for the men size watches. However, if she wants to go for a formal occasion or a meeting or something like that, then a ladies Rolex classic size is more appropriate.

What Celebrities can get away with in terms of fashion and accessories are different from ordinary folks. Celebrities can wear a red suit or dye their hair purple to a business meeting but is not so appropriate for ordinary folks.

But hey, what do I know? when the trend is to say "wear what you like, who cares what others say" or "that 44 mm sports watch can be worn together with a tuxedo".

Idk if it's a trend, but I love women in men's Rolex watches. I think the ladies models look a bit dated on the wrist in comparison.

In NYC I sometimes saw women with a Daytona or a 36mm DJ/DD but it wasn't too frequent.

In HK I see frequently see women with Submariners, GMTs and even SD4k and DSSD.

I'm not sure if it's a trend. One thing I'll join you in condemning is the wearing of diamond bracelets on the same wrist as a Rolex - it's Rolex abuse.

I recently gave my 32 year old twin daughters my Submariner and 40mm Explorer-II.
They wanted them and LOVE them....
I offered to buy them brand-new Oysters-Perpetuals, Date-Justs, etc....
They wanted mine......so sent both watches into Rolex for complete service and basically presently them new 20 & 30+ year old watches.
They look nice on them even at 40mm....

My wife has taken my 36mm DJ and it looks great on her... I don't mind women wearing larger watches one bit

Sounds like my wife was there lol. 36 SS/RG DJ and a RG DD with CL shoes would be the normal dress code for her:)

My wife buys men's full size rolexes and likes to wear them loose. Sometimes we share our watches with each other. I haven't found an occasion or need for any of her Hermes bags yet.........

My wife has the 35mm Yachtmaster. She was never interested in the smaller watches. It isn't a fashion thing to her it's about visibility. I can certainly relate as my eyes age and I develop "short arm syndrome".

I believe there's more of trend of guys out there the last 15-20 years adopting "woman stuff" than the other way around; Man-bags, bracelets for decoration, time spent getting manicures and pedicures, body waxing, botox, etc.

Your average Rolex "tool watch" buying guy now most likely responds to a flat tire by calling Emergency Roadside Service or talking to Siri, no different than a woman wearing a Ladies-size Datejust.

Men seem to be changing a lot more than women.

valid point...a good number of men are now trying to get 'in touch' with their feminine side & vice-versa. the girls basketball coach at our local high-school wears a man's Rolex & on her, it looks somewhat appropriate.

this is all very good for the Rolex company in terms of sales & sphere of influence. it's not about being a 'hater' as some have stated...just an observation of our current fashion trends.

I think this is probably the first comment I've made on this forum, as a long time reader and lurker. But I'm a woman, and I've owned and loved between 20 and 30 Rolex. All of which have been from 36-40mm.

Im not sure I could roll my eyes any harder at the "lousy actress" comment. Because of course Charlie Sheen and his Rolex dangling ilk are such shining examples of talent, sophistication and er.. manly endeavour.
