DDII to DD40... what in the world?!

Okay, so my YG DDII Black Roman has always been my favorite watch. I bought it 2 years ago and swore it would be the one watch I never got rid of!

Out of nowhere, this DD40 comes out and I am totally shocked! Now, I don't have as much experience as most of you seasoned collectors, but I've never seen Rolex only make a watch for a few years. What the heck happened? Did they make a mistake with the size? Has Rolex given any information on why the made the change?

I will admit, I have always secretly felt like my DDII was just a smidge too big. So I think I am going to trade it in for the DD40. But will they scratch the DD40 in 3 years and go back to the DDII.... or do you think the DD40 is here to stay?

The whole thing just seems so weird.

Also, has anyone traded their DDII for a DD40, or plan on it? Anyone have any side by side photos? I am curious to see how much of a difference there is. Of course, my AD doesn't have one.

Good question - I think the DD40 will be here to stay, while I personally like the DD2 a bit more due to the size.

They likely had overall feedback (in the form of lower than expected sales and other customer comments) that made the DD40 a reality.

I always felt that the bezel on the DD2 was out of proportion to the rest of the watch.

That seems to have been corrected with the DD40.

Who knows the future? Important is whether you like the watch. But as an existing owner of the DD40, I love the size and proportions.

I think they got it right with the DD40. I'd make the switch if I was in your position.

The DD40 is just such a superior fit and feel to the DD41mm. Try it on and see...

Yes that 1mm difference is perceptible. It's not often Rolex admits a mistake but I think they have in this case. Does that mean I'll get rid of my DDII? Heck no but I may add a DD40.

I was waiting to a buy a day date for a long time and I was really confused between the two choices then, the 36mm and 41mm. I wanted the DDII, but I felt the bezel was out proportion to the rest of the watch, and the 36mm was a bit too small for my wrist. The choice was really really hard, and fortunately at the right time came the DD40. The watch was just perfect, everything I wanted out of the 36mm and the 41mm in one watch! The day this watch was showcased at Basel, my decision was made! Hardest part was waiting for it to arrive at stores later in 2015……such a painful long wait that was!!

The reduction in bezel size as well as the 1mm case size, thus making it feel more like a 2mm change, points to a deliberate change made by Rolex, but I think having the new movement ready precipitated the change in what seems quite a quick time since the DD2's intro.

I think the DD40 is a fantastic watch. In the YG, however, I would also look at the silver romans and the silver stick.

Would I trade a DD2 for one? I don't know if you'll get the bang for your buck, but hey, at the end of the day, it's up to you.

Both the DDII and DD40 are great watches. I do think rolex made a mistake on the sizing and thats why it went to the 40mm. I have a big feeling the DJII will also be discontinued and will turn into DJ40.

I would to either but personally like the DD40 more.

Congrats on the incoming.

I agree 100% and look forward to a 40mm DJ. Baselworld 2016? Or next year?

Congrats on the incoming! Also hunting a DD40 and also considering the champagne dial. Either that or the silver dial.
