Me and my partner are looking to book up to spend Christmas in New York next Christmas. After a bit of help as neither of us has been to NYC before.
-Looking for a Nice hotel that is fairly central.
-we are looking at going a couple of days before Xmas day and spending a week, is there much to do over the festive period or does stuff tend to close? Typical touristy things.
-has anybody eaten out having a traditional Xmas dinner on Xmas day, are restaurants open?

Any info would be great, Thankyou in advance.

Plenty of luxury hotels in NYC, if that's what you are after. The Hiltons/Sheratons aren't really all that much in NYC.

For tourist activities, Peninsula has a good location. My favorite hotel is the Trump Soho - less centrally located but much better value in my opinion.

The Sherry-Netherland just got voted best hotel in the USA by Tripadvisor. I've never stayed there, though, I just remember Dustin Hoffman mention it in Midnight Cowboy. I've only stayed in the Peninsula, which is ok.

I just always stay at the Hilton Midtown, there's usually a deal on for Exec room and Exec Lounge access etc. Ok prices, great location (6th and 54th) and good service.

Of course if you want to spend luxury hotel money then there are plenty of other options for a lot more money....

Stayed at the Loews a week or two before Christmas and enjoyed it. Close to the park and shopping

I like the London, but it is a bit of a walk to Central Park, since your will be there in winter.

Four Season would be the nicest, centrally located hotel.

There are tons of very nice hotels off 5th but they are typically older with small rooms and small bathrooms.

It's a touristy town but almost all stores will keep typical holiday hours. All will be closed on Christmas day and New Year day.

I stay at the Lexington. Its close to Grand Central and pretty central to everything we do. The hotel itself is very nice, modern, and has gorgeous suites. Good cab location if the weather isn't cooperating.

Most times stay at Marriott-Marquis, Crowne Plaza.

I've heard good things about the Marriott on Times Square.

Avoid the Carlton on 5th, it's a dive.

You won't have a problem finding a restaurant or reservations on Christmas day. It's pretty quiet here. All hotel restaurants will be open, every restaurant in Chinatown (seriously), and every diner in the city. Most hotel restaurants are good and some are great.

I will second this even though I've never stayed at this location. I've seen it and I've stayed at several Park Hyatts throughout the world. They are always a step above the rest. I put them above any chain; Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Peninsula, and Intercontinental.

I've always used Marriott Residence Inn. Great location, awesome views, large rooms with kitchen, nice service etc. Not a 5 star hotel but I really don't need more than what they offer.

Mandarin Oriental/Waldorf/Park Hyatt/Four Seasons/Ritz

One of those, you can't go wrong really.

Waldorf has seen better days...30 years ago. Desperately needs a revamp.
I used to live pretty much next door from the Mandarin Oriental, and the location is amazing. For better service, go for the Four Seasons.

A "value wild card" sometimes is the Helmsley Park Lane, great hotel too and much much cheaper than the 4s/mo.
Never stayed at the Peninsula in NYC, good location and heard good things.

The Mark, St. Regis, JW Marriott, and the Baccarat are very nice (so I've heard, I live across the river in NJ so no NYC hotels for me).

Park view rooms at the Plaza. Old world style with large rooms and bathrooms. Park view rooms at the Helmsley Park Lane (dark horse pick).
