Recently learned........

Just thought I'd pass on some sage advice..

Everything I have in my home can be replaced....TV's watches etc.

Just a few days ago, I got a phone call from a friend of mine that just lost his home to a fire. He explained that everything he had was replaceable..or not important.....except one item...

Digital photos...

If you're like me....my hard drive retains all the photos I've ever taken ( over 80gb )...and I'm good about backing them up to another external WD drive..and I even put them on 300 yrs. DVD's.....

the only problem...they're all in my room...in my house. If the home ever went up in flames...they'd be gone.

My recommendation..... get another portable drive...back em up once a month and keep that drive with ya at work. It's highly unlikely that both home and work go up in flames............

just my .02!

Good advice. This is something I worry about as well - my backup external drive is upstairs, and if there was a fire?

That is great advice. I would hate to lose all the XXX photos of all of my wives. That would be a crying shame.. They mean a lot to me and if anyone would like to see them just send a PM. It won't be long before ABS, Carolina, Lisa, Lisa too, Karis, and Nancy block me.

Joe, do you just rattle this stuff off, or do you lie awake at night thinking of these crazy ideas?!?

You should see the thoughts that run around in my head that I can't share with normal people, like you.

Normal is a relative concept, but compared to you - yeah!

use carbonite or equivalent, www.carbonite.com

$50 a year, i have 120gb backed up on them, and since the site is external and the backup is automatic, even a fire shouldnt be an issue

Yes, offsite backup is important, I do a regular backup often and I do an offsite backup and update it every 3-4 months. Photos are not replaceable!

Take heart if there was a fire you may lose all your family photos, but at least everyones wristshots of their Rolex would be safe on Photobucket

Good topic for a thread. I have a lot of photos saved to sites like photobucket, but a lot of old family photos are still not saved in any way digitally.

I'm a firm believer in not keeping all your eggs in one basket so this has given me a new impetus to safeguard some irreplaceable items like that.

Thanks for the heads up.

I usually e-mail all my pictures to my folks so they can see what I'm doing over here on the other side of the world!
So I'm hoping they keep the pics I sent them
Hmm... I better call my dad and tell him not to delete every e-mail I send him!

Get an external hard drive, put a copy of the photos on there and put it in a safety deposit box.

Like Martin says.....All your photobucket images will be safe...

So upload some of those vacation and exotic ports-of-call photos and share them with your TRF family...
