Can a new model Rolex handle crashing waves/surfing? Will clasp stay shut?
Just wondering before I lose my watch to the pacific.
Is the clasp strong enough to stay in place while doing an activity like surfing? |

i have heard stories of them falling off when a board caught them at the right angle...
do you really need to wear a rolex while surfing? unless it is one of those poser surf days why not just leave it in the safe and not let it lessen your enjoyment!

That said yours may be the only legit is it safe thread I have ever read...if the watch drops in deep water it will be a mofo to find it I have worn an older sub doing everything my life has encountered rock climbing & smacking off the side, off road motorcycling and crashing, skiing and falling, diving both water and desk, outrunning a bull in a pitch black field of a foreign country & falling in the process (while I wasn't hurt, it did result in the urgent need of a laundry and shower), even digging through the rubble of fallen smoldering skyscrapers etc... and it never came close to falling off.

I had the clasp of my TT Sub come undone while on the waterslide at Atlantis in the Bahamas. I didn't even feel the watch slide off.
Fortunately, I disregarded the sign telling me not to dive back in and search for valuables. I found it before the help did. 😀 So perhaps a Rolex clasp on a Sub is not a good idea for surfing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

You can only wear your rolex when diving into a bowl of soup... the only diving allowed with any rolex, especially a sports variation. Proceed with caution.

You should never wear a Rolex anywhere at any time. You should send it to me for safekeeping. I will make sure the surf doesn't get to it.

If you're worried about damaging or losing your watch while surfing, take it off and enjoy your time in the ocean.

I've spent much of my time on this planet immersed in the oceans chasing waves. The clasp can take it right up until you find that one wave that rolls you in to the beach sans watch. Unless I had way more money than sense I'd never wear a Rolex into the surf zone.

The question should be.. Will the spring bars take the pressure of hitting the edge of my surfboard or slamming hard into the surf?
Your clasp will be fine, your spring bars, that's a different matter. Scuba diving yes, snorkelling yes, swimming yes, surfing em. |

Tough crowd!
Thanks for all the input guys, I'll try to hide it in the glove compartment and lock it. I've known of people having bad luck with hotel safes in 5 star hotels, I always keep it on when I travel, just never done activity this strenuous on the clasp and/or springbar. |

BTW, I'd be more concerned about a wipe out slamming the crystal into the board or a rock and cracking it than I would be about it falling off.

I've surfed all over with my sea dweller on a nato. Put it on a Maratac and you should be fine. Mine has handled as big as 12' w no problem.

Like you I'm a waterman as well. I've surfed plenty all over the world and ridden plenty of double and triple overhead swells. As a result I know for certain the ocean has enough energy to strip a watch from my wrist quite easily. Unless of course it were tucked under a wetsuit like I'm usually wearing at home in the Pacific Northwest. But even then I take it off just in case. I'm surprised you think that a 12' wave is that benign. You must be a Mavericks and Jaws local.

We probably spent some time together at the jetty. Uncrowded weekdays are fun there on nice long period West swells. Remember Al's shop? I know him pretty well. Wetsuit technology has come a LONG way. I've been wearing Patagonia's rubber for several years now and you barely even know you have it on. Hard to believe we used to go ot there in thick restrictive Hotlines and Jack O's.
