THOMAS MERCER MARINE CHRONOMETER.

This looks nice have put in a bid,a very nice fusee movement with four pillars,a quality maker my estimate it will go well over £1600

Made in St Albans, (Thomas Mercer 1822 - 1900.) It's gimballed but with that kind of accuracy which was current in the 1800's. Captain Vancouver who surveyed the BC Coast likely used one of these and his "fixes" for Lat and Long obtain to this very day.
I used to sail with the Blue Funnel Line as 2nd Radio Officer. Any day approaching 12 noon all the Apprentices and the Third and Fourth officers would be out on the bridge taking their Sextant readings and right on Noon by the Chronometer the Ship's Bells would ring 8 bells and the whistle would blow.
Here is my Boston Shipstrike on my vessel, from a very prestigious American marine clockmaker (est 1880). Its much more recent and not as rare as the Mercer (not a chronometer) but a ship's bells striking clock - "Eight Bells and All's Well!!.
