If you buy pre-owned and it has absolutely no scratches, then it likely was polished. But there may be exceptions.

My general rule is if it has been polished in the past, I prefer to have it re-done to factory specs for my pleasure.
If it hasn't been polished, I would never send it in for polishing but enjoy it as is.

To each their own I suppose

I prefer unpolished.

I find it rare to find someone who really knows what they're doing when it comes to a proper polishing of a watchcase and bracelet.

In the correct light, I can tell if someone polished the watch, especially when it comes to the shiny parts of the case and bracelet. I can see the swirls. That's something you won't see coming out of a factory piece.

Regarding the brushed parts of the case and bracelet, you can hide it very easily, however, on the shiny parts, not so much.

because some folks like their watches to look like it was dragged behind a car (like me).

but, in reality, a proper polish requires skill; its an art to perform a proper polish on any jewelry or timepiece --- and there's no way to fix a polish gone bad.

the variable between a grind job and and an average polish is about 1%. think about what it takes to get to a great polish... it also rounds out bevelled or sharp edges over time.

How do you gents figure this will affect resell on say a HULK that is otherwise great shape but "needs a polish" how much value your think it's reducing vs one that had already had previous owners wear marks polished away?
1-300$. More?

What you're saying is known as an inherent contradiction. How can a watch be in great shape, but needs a polish??????????????

If were talking about some scuff on the clasp due to the previous owner resting their wrists on a countertop or something along those line, I'd leave the bracelet as-is. You polish it, you'll bee putting those scratches right back later down the line.

Lay off the polishing.

I have never polished mine ... I do not want to lose any precious metal to a jewelers floor... When mine needs servicing, it will be done then at RSC...

No reason to polish a rolex.

Does anyone use something to "polish" their brushed stainless steel sport models?

Some people will use a scotch brite pad. Leave it to the professionals to do a proper job.

When I had my 16750 serviced at ABC watch works I had them refinish the case back to factory specs. I bought this watch as my birth year 30th birthday gift. Now I plan to wear it for the next 30 years and all the battle scars will be mine.

What if the polish was done at the RSC? Then isn't that 'ok'?

Only get it polished when getting it serviced at a RSC. A lot of members think it devalues the watch so they specifically say even during servicing not to polish the watch. As i learn more and more about rolexes and watches in general. I honestly will not polish my watches anymore. I feel rolex purist have this one right and the natural wear of the watch is something to cherish.

I don't care about this dramatic concern with polishing. Make it look new when I get it back from service.

Think people are mainly afraid of bad polishing jobs, so would rather don't have them polish at all. I would not mind having mine slightly polished upon service by RSC or any well respected watchmen.

I do understand the fact that polishing a watch over and over will eventually ruin the finish and therefore on vintage pieces that are rare and discontinued or more delicate I would prefer to keep them unpolished as much as possible.

However on modern chunky maxi cases, if you need to polish the watch, by all means go ahead. I see no issue with that.

It would be great if RSC could polish the maxi case until it has the shape of the original case

I like it both ways I think vintage maybe more untouched but the newer models I like them looking good a little polish never hurt.

For vintage, you want it look old therefore no polish. For me, I won't send back the watch for polishing because the scratches come back after awhile. If send back to RSC (not Authorized service center) for servicing, I don't mind the watch is polished.
