Funny question about my Sub...

Picking up breakfast at McDonald's yesterday and the kid ringing up my order says "Wow that's a nice watch... is it an Invicta?". Thinking quickly I replied "Thanks but no it's a copy"

Funny, there have been a few on here who have received similar "compliments".

Nothing wrong with Invicta though, they are not for me, but I have a few coworkers who love them. Always excited to show off newest they have. They are usually rather large, but I remember back when I was very happy wearing a fossil, so who am I to judge.

Definitely see more "fashion watches" around my office than Swiss time pieces, that's for sure.

I'd disagree. Mine keeps great time, and let me figure out what my "grail" would be for under 100 bucks. Remember not everyone can afford a 5k+ watch, and all collections have to start somewhere. They have their time and place. Junk to you might be a nice watch to them on a McSalary

X2 Agree William. A watch is a very personal choice, and I NEVER criticize someone's choice of a watch; be it a $49 Casio or a six-figure Patek. It is the Passion for a timepiece that we all enjoy and can share, regardless of price point. If someone is happy with and proud to wear and passionate about their Invicta, then I congratulate, compliment, and share their passion as much as someone wearing a platoona.

Watches are like your friend's girlfriends, regardless of what you really think, you always compliment how beautiful they are.

I see your point but my read on the situation (based on the question) was that, while giving a sincere compliment, he didn't really know a lot about watches.

While you're right in that it was a potential "teaching moment", with people in line behind me wasn't going to give a "coach up" session in McDonald's on a Sunday morning. More than anything it just struck me as funny that his "go to" nice watch was Invicta...

So this went a bit off the rails from my original post becoming a back and forth about everything from work ethics to youth in society to nutrition and somewhere in there some points about watches...

Great discussion but let me please expand a bit on what I found funny about his Invicta comment.

In wearing a Rolex watch I would think it fair to project that most/all of us have been asked at some point;

1. Nice watch, what kind is it?
2. Nice watch, is that a Rolex?
3. Nice watch, is that a real Rolex?

Having been asked all of those before it would not have caught me "off guard" the way his question did as he in a sense "flipped the script" by making no mention of Rolex, or asking one of the "usual" questions, but going right to Invicta is what I found funny in a "paradigm shift" way.

I was not rude to him (I didn't think) and answered him politely. I just found it a funny commentary that we as "knowledgeable" watch collectors/wearers/experts are very familiar with the "hierarchy" of different brands and know where Invicta and Rolex fall on the pecking order while this young man, perhaps not yet having gathered that "knowledge" and formed other opinions, thought that a nice looking watch might be an Invicta like another it would seem he has seen and admires (or perhaps has himself but he was not wearing a watch).

He seemed like a nice enough kid, did his job well and under other circumstances there may have been further conversation but waiting in line for food (Which is certainly of questionable nutritional value but tastes really good!) was not that time or place.

Love the exchange of thoughts and opinions though, this forum is great!!

Yep...had this happen from a Costco employee whom was handling a return from me and noticed my SDC 4k.

He had just been given an Invicta Sub for Christmas and was super excited about it!

I told him that was really cool, and yeah...I love mine too!

a. someone mistakenly acknowledges your Rollie for something not even in the same stratosphere, OR
b. someone correctly identifies your watch and says, "Hey, is that a Rolex?"

And answer without sounding like an arrogant ass...?

A. It doesn't matter to me and if there is honest interest in knowing about my watch I will tell them what it is. Otherwise I will say thank you and move on.

B. Depends how and where the "identification" takes place. Could be perceived as sketchy or friendly. It all depends but for the most part a simple, "hey, yes it is" is enough.

A) I had my Omega Planet Ocean mistaken for a Rolex and on another occasion for a Fossil.

B) I haven't had my 1680 long enough. Generally (historically) whatever I am wearing goes unnoticed.

OK & here's question #2...how would you react/respond if someone asked you if your Rolex was a fake?

(a) it's fine to say "No its not a Seiko" or "No, it's a Rolex"
(b) "Yes, it is"

Answering truthfully without making a big fuss does not make you an arrogant ass. There is something just not right if you are wearing a Rolex but intentionally saying its not a Rolex or trying to deflect the question.

I was in the bathroom at work one day washing my hands and an auditor that was visiting was also in there. I was wearing my Sub on an Bond style NATO. He looked over at me washing my hands and was like "Whoah! I think we have the same watch!" and I said "Oh yeah, that's cool!". I noticed he was wearing something on a NATO, but wasn't sure what, but knew it wasn't a Sub. Then he leaned in a little closer and said "oh man. My bad I'm dumb. We aren't wearing the same thing, not even close." I laughed and said "Well yours looks pretty awesome, what is that?" and he said "Oh just a Timex Weekender. Wow I feel silly." and I said "Man, that's an awesome watch. Don't you love NATO straps?" and we went back and forth for a bit as I tried to soothe the guy's embarrassment.

Moral of the story - if someone cares enough about watches to strike up a conversation, I'm thrilled. I don't care if they're wearing a MilSub with sword hands or a Seiko monster.

The timex weekender looks just about nothing at all like a sub. But that was a classy move on your part and i'd like to think I would do the same if I was in that position. Well played my good man
