Luxury Watch Values
I just read an article on the Wall Street Journal that said polishing your watch can devalue it. Has anyone else heard this? Is this bogus or is there some truth to it?

Some truth? It is truth!
If rolex maintains the watch, and the polishing is done correctly, it can be okay. Depends on the watch, rarity, etc. But high-value vintage pieces, it can absolutely gut the value.

It is truth yes, but there is some falsity as well.
If you own a 40 year old watch and it was polished once 20 years ago by a highly skilled professional, it most likely didn't devalue the watch, unless it's an extremely rare and collectible reference. |

I think that's generally true and similar to how refinishing certain pieces of unique antique furniture can greatly lower their collector value versus original condition pieces.

i say polishing can only hurt and not help value for a true collector. i think most people want everything as original as possible. if you are in the business to resell, then never polish the watch. let the person who buys it refinish it however they want.
