Rolex Sub 16800 Tropical Dial
I have been offered a Rolex Sub 16800 8.8Mil with tropical dial. My question is if its worth paying $6K for the watch which is what the owner is asking? The watch is all original. Your advice would be highly appreciated.

Case is strong? 6k is probably reasonable.

No problem.
I am looking at the bracelet on the big monitor and it is trashed. If original to the watch, figure a trip to Mike Young into your negotiations... But all original parts has value even if they are not in the best of condition in my opinion. It does the "leg work" to tell you what is/was correct from Rolex and you can decide to replace with correct better condition parts if you want to clean it up a bit. |

The owner will bring the watch to me today. I can better assess its condition and originality when I see it. I will take pictures and post it here for your and other's opinion before I decide to buy it or not. Thanks. |

Sorry, I would not pay that much of a premium for a white gold surround "so called" tropical.

Totally agree. I got a gorgeous NON-white gold surround 16800, with amazing patina and an excellent condition 93150 bracelet w 12 links, for $6K from HQ Milton.

It may be a little high for my liking as well. Probably worth 5k

I don't see it, why are we calling this a tropical dial?...it looks damaged an un attractive to me. @Kingface66's 16800 looks 10X nicer for the same $$

"Tropical"? As in more attractive than if it were "non-tropical"? In this case it would be like saying that a "pre-comex" is even better than a Comex
I'd say 6 is too high for this piece |

I like it, OP - bracelet is shot; stick it on a variety of NATOs and don't bother restoring the links, which are beyond it, IMO. It's worth what you're willing to pay for it. Tons of character/'damage'. It's a look some people will pay for, as you can't acquire it overnight or fake it. Pristine ones (new) are easy to get, but pristine vintage will command the premium. This is what it is - rock it!

In my humble opinion as, a 16800 owner, this is not one I would pay $6K for. Judging by the picture it looks more like a water stain than a dial going tropical. Interesting that despite its "interesting characteristics" no mention of the watches mechanical integrity. Anybody had a look in the back?

Op tropical is all the rage but only true tropicals worth the premium.
I think for this Reference your money probably better spent on a matte dial ( and possibly less than $6k.) If you do want the watch you have posted you need to negotiate a little bit. |
