Cookout of cookouts
Well, I decided to have a cookout for 60 people when some uninvited guests showed up.
5,000 HONEYBEES! You talk about a whole lot of fun. I called a beekeeper who showed up in 30 minutes and believe it or not, nobody got stung. This beekeeper managed to get them on 1 apple tree, and got them started filling up a "hive box", which he said would take about a day to completely fill. The party went on. |

That's pretty interesting. I didn't know that when bees become a problem that you can call a bee keeper. Kind of like calling the dog catcher for stray dogs I imagine. It's also pretty interesting that they have a "hive box" to attract the bees into for removal. I wonder why such a large group was drawn to your yard.
60 people for a cookout? Sounds like a good party.

Evidently, the Honey Bee business is big business, due to the excitement in his voice when I told him, in what I thought were only about 500 bees, he said he would be right over.
He told me swarms of Honey Bees typically aren't dangerous being they don't sting when they are looking for a new hive. Typically they sting when they are protecting the hive they live in or protecting the queen bee. Why my backyard? He said it's just where the queen bee got tired and landed. The only scary thing was the group of 10 year olds that wanted to shake the tree and hose the bees down the whole time. What a fiasco! |

Very interesting. With all the talk of the diminishing numbers of honey bees in the U.S. and the corresponding negative effects your bee wrangler probably did very well today. Party on.

UPDATE
Last night, half the bees entered the hive box left by the beekeeper, this morning all the bees left the hive box and are back on the tree. The beekeeper returned and told me it was no use, the bees don't want nest in his hive box, they were in a position where he could not get them and some of the bees were shaking their tails, indicating they found a new place to start a hive some where else. In conclusion, he said within a day or two they will all leave for the new hive. |
