Last of the 5513s, twin or triplock?
I should know this, but did the last of the 5513 Subs come with a twinlock or triplock crown?

Three dots on the crown suggests triplelock........doesn't it.

Yes, sure. Mine (L-serial) has three dots for triplock but it was replaced during service, as were the crowns on many old Subs. As the dial depth-rating is 660/200 I was wondering what the original crown would have been. I'm pretty sure that the older 5513s (also with the 660/200 rating) were twinlock.

Maybe you want a higher resolution on this.
First was the twin lock (700) with no dots then the 702 (top o-ring) which had three dots and then the 703 which also has three dots but the bottom o-ring to protect the threads better. 700 was used up to early 70's then the 702 was used, but I think only five or so years when the 703 was introduced, probably around 1980 or so (I cant find my files with better info than my shoddy memory but my 1978 Tudor sub has the original 702 tube). Those continued until just recently when the 704 (monoblock) crown was introduced. Prior to the 704, crowns were brass wrapped in stainless foil essentially. A good idea in my opinion because the tubes are stainless. Now the 704 is solid stainless and stainless threading onto stainless is not a great idea in my experience. I think we will start seeing a lot more galled threads this way. Anyway, I got off on a tangent there but maybe that helped a bit... |
