Recollective Memory with Rolex 18 years ago

Woah...as I was perusing the threads a memory just popped in my mind I had with the Rolex brand that I completely forgot about until just now.

I haven't thought much about Rolex until last year when I purchased a 16700 GMT, but just recalled being in a Rolex AD while on a vacation in Hawaii ~18 years ago.

I was a year into a new job, and wanted a nice watch for the office environment...I recall the price around $3,500...so must have been a 16610 ss date sub...I was ready to purchase (which was a significant amount for a watch in my mind/starting out in life) but walked away when the sales person mentioned servicing every few years to the tune of $400-$450!

Thinking back I missed out on such an opportunity to have that sub all these years (in my 20s, 30s and into my 40s). Wish this forum was around back then to act as an enabler.

Anybody have similar stories?

I had a seiko for many years, then a citizen eco drive, but somewhere in the back of my mind couldn't stop thinking about that smooth sweeping second hand of a Rolex, and the allure of a pepsi bezel that drew me back after all these years.

Recently I thought a 4 piece collection, a mix of vintage and new. I lean towards vintage, have been window shopping 1680 reds / 5513 meters, but always a bit annoyed with the lack of lume. But now thinking about that Sub I passed up all these years ago, I think fondly of the thought of carrying one watch through the decades. One familiar watch on my wrist, accompanying me everywhere I went, through every one of life's milestones.

Now with this in mind...I'm wondering if there is such a watch. I never gave it much thought until tonight...and never gave this particular watch much thought, but I'm thinking if I were to choose one for the next 30 years...it just might be the 116610LN.

I won't figure it out tonight, and part of the fun is the journey...until the next step, my humble 16700.

I like this sentiment.

I often times think about the "one" watch I want to ride along with me for the journey ahead..

I often consider the 116610, but only reservation I have is a superficial one....that I'd feel cliche wearing it.

The 16700 is a great watch....perfect sidekick for all those years ahead.

You will buy the 116610LN.....then in a few years there will be another model that ticks the boxes.....then another.....then another.....but there will come a day when you start to think if only I had kept that 16700.......do yourself a favour and stick with what you have, it is a great watch.
