Does Warranty Transfer?

I bought a watch that was brand new and I was wondering does warranty transfer over (not that I need it, I was just curious). Does anyone know? Or should I take that up with the RSC?

warranty starts ticking from date of purchase and is good for the watch - owner independent.

So regardless of who's name is on the card they will still service the watch?

Unless the warranty certificate specifically states that the warranty is only applicable to the original purchaser, then it can be transferred to a 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. owner within the initial 2 years of purchase.

I purchased a used GMT from the USA. Took it to Rolex Australia, they took a look at the warranty card and said, "no problem we will honour the warranty for you!"

Here is what the Rolex USA Warranty says.

I think it says...It is not transferable, and it is also void if you add any non-Rolex parts..

And that there is no such thing as "Open papers".

The Rolex SA warranty for my M/3186 EXPII reads a bit differently:
Quote:
ROLEX SA certifies this watch to be in perfect condition and guarantees its dependable functioning for a period of two years from the date of purchase. The guarantee excludes normal wear-and-tear, loss, theft or damage due to mistreatment. An addition of or substitution of parts with those not manufactured by Rolex will render the guarantee invalid.
This guarantee applies only if (1) the watch is sold by an Official Rolex Retailer, (2) the guarantee card is completed in full by the Official Roles Retailer at the time of purchase, and (3) this guarantee card is presented with the watch, be it to the Official Rolex Retailer or to one of the Official Rolex Service Centers listed in this manual. And work carried out by Third Parties will invalidate the guarantee.
Rolex SA certifies that his watch has been entirely manufactured in Switzerland.

Yup. In Europe, warranty goes with the watch. In US, it goes with the original purchaser , which I don't agree. These rules are made by Rolex USA
Hopefully that will change.

Always thought the watch was warrantied regardless of who bought it.

So here is a scenario, you buy a watch in Hong Kong while traveling. You put the watch on your wrist and have the box and papers sent home, they never arrive. Will Rolex USA service the watch? Can’t they just pop the serial number into the computer and find the start ticking date?

No, Rolex does not track that info, you would have to contact your credit card company or the AD for a copy of the sales receipt. Rolex USA is a stickler on this stuff.

i'm not sure how this is thread is getting so sidetracked. the rolex warranty is good for the watch and is not dependent on the original owner. i can't find anything that says this varies from country to country either. so, as far as i can tell, a rolex warranty is attached to the watch and is transferable to a successor owners.

Can't agree, David. A careful reading of Larry's scan of the RUSA warranty discloses the statement that "Any intervention of a third party voids this warranty", whereas the post of Fr. John's warranty (from an Asian AD) only mentions "work carried out by a third party" as voiding the warranty. It clearly states that if the watch is presented with the properly filled out card, the warranty work will be carried out. The RUSA syntax leaves 'wiggle room' for the claim that the warranty is with the original owner, only.

The RUSA warranty has been so interpreted and discussed at length on various fora.

transferring a watch to a new owner is not an intervention though. intervention would be opening the case and doing something to the movement, dial etc.

to be clear here - if you buy a watch from someone that originally purchased it from an a.d. and the warranty is still valid, rolex will repair the watch if it's returned to them via an a.d. there is nothing on the warranty card that says it can't be xfer'd. what if you bought the watch for someone as a gift? of course it would still be covered.

Intervention as it is stated in the warranty refers to any and all intervention, both physical and transactional. If any third party intervenes between an official Rolex dealer and the customer whose name is required to be placed on the warranty card at the time of the original purchase, the warranty is void. I phoned two Rolex service centers (Dallas & BH), and both confirmed this. That isn't to say there are ways around it, but officially, the warranty is not transferable. Only the one-year warranty following an overhaul is transferable.

The Rolex warranty is NOT transferable to successive owners, not in the US. I spoke with RSC about this. The original 2-year warranty is not transferable, but the 1-year Rolex gives post-overhaul warranty is.

In some other countries, the original warranty is tied to the watch, not the owner. That is not so in the US.

also if you buy from a grey dealer the rolex warranty is void. even if you have your name on it. Rolex track the serials of watches bought by grey dealers. this is to stop grey dealers buying all daytona's GV's etc and selling for a larger profit.

The warranty is worldwide, however as far as Rolex USA is concerned, it is only valid to the original purchaser. It is common for AD's to extend the warranty themselves, I know my AD now has a fiver year warranty and they pay for any work that needs to be done, depending on your AD, this may or may not be transferable and the work is usually initiated by the AD, whether it is sent to the RSC, is up to them.

What if the original purchaser left the warranty card blank? In this situation, can you write in your name (as second owner) and get it worked on in the US? I believe their main computer has the original owner's name; will the discrepancy raise red flags for RSC?

Yes, you can write your name in on the paperwork....and there is no main computer that Rolex has, just the AD has your info.

Here's one for you, say the warranty card says John Doe on it. You walk into a local AD and and say.....Hi, my name is John and I need some work done on my watch. Give them the watch and warranty card and leave, guess what, they will fix your watch. I have never shown ID while at a AD, always pay cash and on my way. Not to be dishonest but it's that simple, regardless what the warranty card says about 3rd parties.

I have never had to get work done while a watch was under warranty but this scenario sure seems like it would work out just fine. I have also had friends who bought used watches and have had them regulated during the warranty period and it was covered.

Since there's no ID involved, I can technically walk into a RSC with a warranty card/papers with "John Doe" on it and still get serviced, right?
