Sad to say, just not feelin' the D-Blue... Now what?

I was actually gonna trade my beloved LVC towards a D-Blue until a little more than a week ago, I serendipitously walked into an AD while on vacation and low and behold there it was, the D-Blue.

I decided to buy it and potentially sell my LVC after the fact. But after years of contemplating this watch, and only a week of ownership I'm nearly positive, it's just not for me. Yes it's crazy tall, yes it's top heavy, yes it's completely oversized (especially for me), but what really sealed the deal for me was to still have access to my LVC for many comparisons. It just makes my LVC feel so perfect.

Although I do like the DSSD (D-Blue), i realized I LOVE my LVC, and there's no room for watches in my collection that I don't love.

So although I could sell it, flipping is so much more fun. Below is my current main rotation and below that are a few candidates for flipping. I threw the daytona in the mix because, well... it's a daytona and I don't have one, but the truth is it's a little small for my liking, and I would prefer a date.

I could use something that's slightly dressy although keep in mind it's not that I want to buy a "dress watch". I have almost no need for a dress watch, but I would like to have the versatility for my next watch to feel right at home in a suit or even tux.
My Rotation:

Out of the ones you have listed i would go with the 116520. It is quite dressy and polished :).

I think a datejust with fluted bezel would create the most variation and you did mention being interested in a dressier watch. If we are considering outside of the Rolex brand, take a look at the JLC reverso.

I also noticed that you do not own a GMT watch. No interest in this model? Its my favorite so im a bit biased :)

Hey Josh,

Thanks for the response!

So I love the GMT line up, whether it be the Ln or BLNR, it's just that part of the way I determine my rotation is to eliminate "toss up" decisions when reaching for a watch. What I mean is that I like the idea of having watches that can be deliberately worn for different reasons.

Right now my LVC is my do it all watch.
My Tudor is kind of my "beater" (for lack of a better expression)
And my AP is my 100% leisure watch. I don't wear it if I'm working or at the park with my son.

I think a watch like the GMT would fall under a "do it all" type of watch, which is great but that spot is kind of filled. I have to be honest I'm leaving towards the AP 15400 but I'm still trying to figure out the possibility of another Rolex. That's why the YM and Daytona are up for discussion.

I do love the fluted bezel datejusts, in fact the blue Arabic numeral DJ2 has always been on my radar.

Take another look at the fluted datejust. It has some serious Bling and i think your collection could use a little Bling for special occasions or for when you just want to have fun

I think it looks great and adds the most variation to your collection based on what you have already.

Based on this (and what you currently have), there isn't a watch that would satisfy your need except for a full dress watch. Each of the potential flips wouldn't add anything different to your current collection. If you want semi-dressy, then the daytona or YM. I feel like the AP you have is amazing. What I would do personally, is flip the DSSD and the hulk and get a smurf. It fills the PM and sub spot with one watch

I should mention, since you mentioned it haunting me. My dad is a brand new old stock zenith daytona that I could buy from him (at a father/son deal). I mean honestly If i expressed serious interest he'd probably give it to me, but he's a collector with the collector mentality and all that, so I wouldn't want to take a brand new watch old stock from his collection unless I was sure it'd be watch that id' keep and wear forever.

I actually do prefer the zenith over the 116520 so holding off on the new daytona won't really "haunt" me.

I totally considered this. Only problem is that my lifestyle wouldn't allow for me to wear the smurf as much as the LVC and although I would absolutely LOVE owning one I couldn't sacrifice the "do it all" spot right now.

Hopefully down the road though this could be an option.

I am pretty rough on watches too, which is why I went with a Planet Ocean 8500 as my "beater." It's robust and has a solid movement. I still think the smurf could be a "do it all" watch... I mean, Dr. Tom races cars in a platona. Although, I get that most people can't wear a gold watch as their daily. If I had a smurf I like to think I would wear it night and day. Alas, it will be a long time before I could save up for one. Okay, since the smurf idea is out, I vote for the YM or the daytona

I believe that you're overthinking and over analyzing Chad. Take a second look at how that fluted DJ that you posted slides into your collection. It's a perfect fit my friend.

Sorry to hear you lost the love for your DBlue. It's been the opposite experience for me

Out of the choices you listed above, I'd vote for the AP, you already have Rloex in your line up. Good luck, and flipping won't be an issue for you at least

Looks like he already has AP in his collection also. 1 Rolex, 1 Tudor, 1 ap.

haha trust me I want to, but in order to put together acquiring the PM that i'd want, Id have to flip more than the D-Blue and I like the versatility.

Plus I'm already over budget considering I was supposed to trade my LVC for the D-blue, but bought it outright.

I've been debating on what (if anything) to add to my Daytona. The RO 15400, 15300, and 14790 have all been considered, as well as the 18238/9 and 118238/9. I'm leaning towards the Day-Dates, and trying to figure out which one I like the best.

That's a long way to say that I'm a big fan of the Royal Oak, and if you're thinking about wearing it as a "dress" watch, that might be the best option!

White dial Daytona would be a nice addition to the mix.

A DD of any flavor would be a nice change of pace.

Maybe a base PAM?

Nice problem to have, my friend.

White Daytona....

Question:
Did you think the Deep Blue Bracelet was in proportion the the Watch?
I tried it on and it felt like a slim stick of chewing gum was wrapped around my wrist.
It's like the Oyster Bracelet needs to be 20% Wider as well as Thicker.
