Black dial, brown shoes, issue?

How do we all feel about wearing brown shoes and belt with black dialed watches? I'm in a suit 5 days a week. Typically navy suit and a mix it up between black lace ups, black alligator belt, or brown Gucci horsebit loafers, brown leather belt, white or light shirt, nice ties... Sometimes with the brown shoes and accessories I feel like black dial is not the best match. I have a 16710, black dial black bezel, but I sometimes feel drawn to the hulk or silver dial Air-King 114210. Anyone else this anal about matching the dial and shoes / belt? It's not a rule that I must stick to, but I do feel like it's a better match.

What's the forum consensus?

In my opinion the dial and bezel should match the clothes, and the strap should match the belt and shoes. That's just how I operate. I think a steel bracelet can probably go with any shoes or belt (so long as those two match).

However, if forced to decide I would say the Air King would go best with brown leather.

For me, I try to keep it consistent between shoes and belt. But for me, it is not a must that my watch be in the same color scheme. A Rolex is such a strong accessory, I view it as a stand-alone item: it can be any color I'm feeling that day. But that's just me...

I'm with you. Belt and shoes are a must. A watch... Not so much.

For real though, I was always told a fine watch stands alone and all other aspects of fashion can take a backseat to your watch.

So I think my dad told me that, which Of course doesn't make it right but I've basically followed that guideline for my entire adult life and my wife still married me, so it seems to be ok.

That said, I am careful about wearing a black strap watch with brown belt and shoes, black dial though!? I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Looking for a white or blue dial as we speak to solve this "problem". It's nice having a little dial color diversity. Loving the milgauss Z blue or explorer II.

I think bracelets carry a lot more weight in pairings than the dial. Black leather will definitely go better with black/gray suits than a brown one.

That said, steel bracelets with white or black dials are far more versatile than the greens or the oranges than we would like to admit. IMHO, of course.

Used to feel the same way until I got mine. Now I wear it with everything. As others have already said, as long as it's on the bracelet, it's fine. I do know what your saying though and will be my justification for picking up a bluesy in the future.

If wearing on a strap I match the strap to belt and shoes. On a bracelet less concerned about dial color. Black or white dials go with most everything.
I would not wear my 16613 with a black suit however.

Dial color, does not matter. Stainless steel bracelet, does not matter.

But if you wear your watch on a strap, it matters, needs to match the shoes and the belt.

Dial color is irrelevant. The case/bracelet should match the belt buckle (YG with brass buckle, SS/WG/Pt with white metal buckle, etc.).

If you wear a strap, it should coordinate on the same color palate as belt and shoes. Exact match can look awkwardly nerdy (too matchy matchy). It's hard not to match the same color palate of brown shoes.

One does not wear brown leather with a navy suit and less so in the office. Remember the old adage - keep brown out of town.

Also loafers in a business environment are a strict no no.

You don't wear what you want to wear, you wear what is expected of you.

As regards to your watch question, I think you are over worrying a bit. Whist the 16710 is prone to catching cuffs (not a good idea in the office) it at least fades into the background.

Best advice I can offer is stick with black leather with your navy suit when in the office.

I couldn't agree more. Having said that the "Brown shoes with a Blue or Black suit " look seems to be creeping in among the " young and trendy " set over here. It's not the look for me.

"keep brown out of town"? Why do C&J, Carmina, Loake 1880 make brown shoes with leather soles? In what business is it wrong with pairing a navy suit with brown shoes, even people in the british parlament can be seen with that combination. It's a good business look, it's just no evening appropriate if you ask me.
Loafers I agree on, they are by definition casual.

Black is considered businesslike and formal whereas brown is for evening and weekends.

It is a convention just like wearing a tie is a convention.

I used to visit Parliament quite a lot during the course of my work and it was rarely MPs or those who worked there who wore brown shoes, it was jounalists and tourists etc.

This is a decidedly English tradition. The rule doesn't hold elsewhere.

Brown shoes are appropriate with all but a black suit in the US.

I agree mostly with Mick re brown for out of town. However, I've worn brown shoes with beige suit or brown/light brown suits at the office and during happy hour.

Matt Lauer of The Today Show is notorious for wearing brown shoes every single day on the show with different color suits. I do not understand that logic.
