I am usually not one to vent about stuff like this, but it seems like at least once a day someone complains that their OCD prevents them from having PCLs, or a specific watch color doesn't suit their wardrobe. That is not OCD. OCD is a debilitating disorder that prevents people from living a normal life (without medication and therapy). The people on the show Hoarders... they have OCD. People that have to turn a light on and off 27 times have OCD. People who are over tidy or organized are anal retentive. An analogy would be someone saying "it's my diabetes" when they pass up a piece of cake, when in actuality they are just not that into cake. Thanks for listening everyone... I feel better.

I took an online test for OCD, it said I had full blowc OCD. I disagree, if I were full blown, I'd have CDO. The letters should be in order.

absolutely not! OCD is a serious disorder while anal-retentive watch concerns border on the trivial. maybe we should blame Rolex marketing collateral as their advertised 'exacting standards' will often attract the same sort of uptight mentality.

it wouldn't surprise me if there are folks with quartz watches who continually reference atomic clocks for confirmation of accuracy. as far as Rolex-related wardrobe matches/mismatches, we can only feel sorry for such individuals as life itself has so much more to offer.

Speaking of... years ago, I was yakking on about something at work, and mentioned that something I did was being rather anal. A coworker says, "technically, that's anal retentive."

I said, "no, correcting me like that is truly anal retentive."

BTW, I cannot tell what kind of car that is. Yeah, I know, it's blue. WRX? Fiesta? It's starting to bug me.

My brother is diagnosed OCD and he is certainly fascinating and disturbing. Some of the strange ticks...

Cannot wear the same undershirt or underwear more than once. He has an entire spare room full of black trash bags filled with once worn undergarments.

He washes his hands and face at least 20 times a day.

He cannot use the same bar of soap, or the same razor more than once. He cuts the bars into little rectangles to make them more "disposable."

If he doesn't open a door "right" he has to keep doing it until it "feels perfect." This one is tough because he is a car mechanic.

Neither term applies to people who are collectors by that fact alone.

Freudian psychology doesn't have much of a following these days and the terminology isn't mainstream in the medical community.

The term OCD is used so often that people forget, if they ever knew, what a debilitating disorder that it is.

People who have OCD certainly don't joke about it.

Collectors don't meet criteria for OCPD, either, by the fact that they collect things.

OCPD isn't funny, either.

There is a difference having OC trait vs the Disorder.

Strict diagnostic criteria to qualify for OCDisorder. No laughing matter for people that has it. Can be quite debilitating.

I think some or most of us can be perfectionist. Slightly obsessed over little details but no real compulsion. And not really interfering with quality of life.

I guess I'm missing the point here because I don't see how someone claiming to have diabetes to avoid cake can be an analogy of OCD. If they do that, they're B/S'ing and/or are incredibly ignorant.
