Do you get, or try to avoid, the Rolex Premium?

Whenever I go shopping for anything expensive that has a negotiable price (i.e not the weekly shop at the supermarket but perhaps visiting an art or antique dealer), I never wear any of my Rolex watches. The same goes for when a trades person has been invited to my home to quote for some work.

I'm concerned that the sight of £5-25K watch may increase the cost/quote ?!

Am I paranoid ..........

Do you feel this 'Rolex Premium' is added to your bill/quote when wearing Rolex and avoided if you don't?

Paranoid YES and regarding any premium its simple if your quote is to much just walk away and it would be the same if I was wearing a Timex..

I don't think as many people notice or care about which brand of watch someone is wearing.
I don't change my lifestyle for others and honestly don't give it much thought as it relates relates to negotiating prices.
Otherwise have to park the car up the street, wear different clothes and accessories and so on. Seems like too much effort to be concerned with.
Just be yourself.

Most people don't know a thing about watches, except one thing most have in common: They usually recognize a Rolex, and are nearly always confused about whether or not they are fakes. So, I wouldn't worry.

I agree with Mark's comment that most people won't notice the brand of watch on your wrist

If I thought someone was looking to overcharge me as I simply had on a Rolex I would tell them this is actually a fake so that's how tight I really am, now give me a better deal.

It hasn't been an issue for me so far, but it probably will be one day. You just have to do your homework beforehand and know what a fair price is. Don't accept anything higher. Just walk away. With some things, you're going to get screwed over regardless. Several years ago (before I even owned a Rolex), my car broke down and the dealership wanted $700 to replace the power steering pump. I had it towed to my local guy and he fixed that, the tensioner pulley, new thermostat, and a bunch of other preventative (routine) maintenance stuff for $500.

It has never hindered me from getting the deal I wanted, on the contrary, I've purchased a Rolex at an AD before where having a Rolex made it better for me when negotiating. Perhaps because they thought I would be a repeat customer and they can make more money in the long term.

They were right. :)

Seems like a mixed bag of responses - I think I'll assume I'm just a little paranoid

Agee with you on that Gus , I definitely wear Rolex on a visit to the AD.

Sorry but the reality is salespeople do take these things into account IF they happen to notice.

When me and my wife first moved into our new house we were getting quoted prices on home project that were higher than the area we had moved from. I'm not saying this happens all the time BUT sometimes it's taken into account. BTW we didn't move into a super nice house, we just moved from a pretty bad area. Haha.

A good salesperson will notice and take it into account. It may work in your favor, as they are more likely to pay attention to someone who is more likely (i.e. has money) to buy something.

Our new house is in one of the top neighborhoods in our upscale city, and I have noticed that quotes for work are higher than before, but then it's a bigger house too, so that may have something to do with it. So who knows?

I remember when I went to an art gallery with my father.
There was a piece I couldn't stop looking at, then he told me to go while he wheeled and dealed with the store owner.

When I came back 20 minutes later the owner of the store grabbed my wrist as I walked in. Then he yelled out "This isn't a fake!" Confused to what was going on, my father was negotiating with the guy and his response was "Why do you need to negotiate? Look at the watch on your sons wrist, to which my father replied "Oh it's a fake."

My dad grinded him for 40% off

I'd be lying if I said this thought has not crossed my mind... BUT... If I care that much about the price I'm willing to pay, I know my price and if the person I'm dealing with is highballing me I'm simply not buying.

I remove it or wear an AP or other brand when getting quotes on my house (roof, plumbing, tile etc). I also use to make sure the car was in the garage when I had my p car. With car buying I don't worry about it as I know exactly where I need to be on the deal and will search far and wide to find it.

I will go against the grain and agree with the OP. It is a little with the watch. Certainly cars and definately when folks come over to the house to quote things. I also have my wife present whomis fluent in another language. Have had that happen before many years ago. We were getting a quote and these two idiots started talking in spanish and were joking and jacking the price. When they gave us the quote and said when can we schedule, she answered back in spanish no thanks and a few other things. They turned white and walked out.

I also love buying cars in shorts, t-shirt and flip flops. Love to see who decides not to help us because of looks. Took me three Porsche dealers to finally find one that wanted my business and didn't care what I looked like, love that.

lol that was me

I actually walked out of the porsche showroom after being ignored and walking into the connected Land Rover showroom and proceeded to buy off one of the rover salesman who was permitted to sell all brands they carry.

I don't think that you are being paranoid. Some people do notice, just like if you pull up in a luxury vehicle. They may say nice vehicle but they are thinking I am paying for his nice vehicle. I deal with a lot of contractors and they drive trucks to do estimates and drive high end luxury cars the rest of the time.

I negotiate the price I want, and only settle on a price if it's in the range I want to spend. So no, I don't think too much about the premium.

While it shouldn't make any difference, I've had a few experiences wherein I know that my wearing a Rolex factored into the price quote. Case in point - I was seeking legal representation for a commercial property closing many years back. When it came time for the lawyer to give me a number - AND I KID YOU NOT - it was ever so clear that HE NOT ONLY LOOKED BUT STARED AT MY ROLEX - began churning his greedy wheels - and then blurted out a price quote. I wasn't so much bothered by the amount in question. What bothered me was that he arrived at that figure - at least in part - based upon what he perceived to be someone who had money to burn. I stood up, we shook hands, and I sought and retained another attorney.
