SD 4000 C vs. Pre-ceramic Subdate.

I've had all the subs (except for the all gold sub and ND ceramic) and have flipped them for any reason. The itch is back to re-buy a sub and have been thinking about the pre-Ceramic Sub-date for its classic appearance (not a fan of the maxicase of the new subs). Although I went to an authorized dealer and saw/tried the SD 4000-C and I was impressed. Of-course the difference in price if considerable but I'd like to hear your impressions. If money wasn't an issue and you were a fan of the sub-SD line of Rolex watches. Would you consider a SD-4000 Ceramic. What are your thoughts?

I'd definitely go with the SD 4k Ceramic. I have a 16610 LV and the older SD 4k and love them both, but the updates to the clasp, ceramic bezel, and matte dial are great updates IMHO.

I'm sure I'll add one to my rotation eventually, but I've got 7 watches in now and only the BLNR and Daytona get any significant wrist time.

I've owned the SD4K for two weeks and I am extremely happy with it. If you want a modern 6 digit diver I personally think it is the best one. With the SD4K you get a more traditional looking case with the lugs and crown guard. Satin dial and the fully marked bezel. I like the date with out the cyclops and the raised crystal. And although it's thicker and the sub and sea dweller are both 40mm the SD4K looks a little smaller on the wrist. Depending on wrist size the could be a pro or con but my wrists are just a hair over 7 inches and it fits perfectly.

I am not familiar with the older bracelet but I do think the glidelock is great. Prior to purchasing and wearing it I wasn't sure how often that I would use it but find that it is very useful.

I don't think the money is as big a difference as the MSRP suggests as the SD4K can be found on the grey market/TS for very close to the subC date. This can be seen as a negative because it suggests if you don't get a good deal you do take a big hit on resale right off the bat. But I think you can mitigate that by buying smartly.

You really need to try it on though as it seems the big complaint of those who flip it is that it's not very comfortable while those who keep it say it's their most comfortable watch so a lot depends on your wrist size and shape. Good luck.

My preference would be the SDc as I like the ceramic, bracelet, dial, lack of cyclops and ability to buy new.

I have flipped both the sub C and SDC even though the new sd has a different case I didn't like the feel or look. Ended up with a 5 digit SD. Everyone raves about the new clasp but for me It just looks so bland and sterile. I know I'm in the minority here but I'd give the 16600 a look!

I have flipped 3 SubC's over the course of the last two years or so. The SD4K isn't going anywhere. I made the mistake of selling it at one point and seriously regretted the decision immediately after. The one on my wrist is here to stay.

I like the SD4k very much, so much so that I'd consider trading my own 16610 for it. The only thing I'm unsure of is the matte dial. I don't think it looks bad at all, just not quite as appealing as the glossy look of the sub dial. I think the SD bezel insert looks fantastic.

I was deciding between a Sea Dweller 4000 (116600) and a vintage Submariner no date myself. Like you, I do not like the shape of the modern Sub. I love the look of well-aged Submariners, and to me, they also carry a coolness factor above that of any modern Rolex you can walk into a store and buy. However, after handling a modern Rolex, it was tough for me to feel charmed by the old bracelets.

In the end, I purchased the Sea Dweller and have been very happy - the Glidelock has also proven to be super useful and I would have a hard time buying a metal bracelet that did not have something like this.

Definitely the sd4k if you remotely want the modern features. Imo Rolex best overall modern diver.

I've owned 'em all at the same time and have had the SDC4K for almost 2 years now, and in the end I will tell you the SDC4K gets my vote by a mile! I flipped my 116610LN and my 16610LN (which I prefer over the Maxi-Case!) I did however keep an 116610 Hulk, as I love that watch too, even though I wish it had the SDC4K's general dimensions!

My problem with the 16600 was the weight and the smaller size when compared to the sub date. I had one and flipped too. I regretted later though I think I had gotten used to the weight. I tried the ceramic SD4000 but of course could not adjust the bracelet since it was new and had the diver extension. If I get it I will keep it for sure but I still have my reservations. You guys who own it. Have you gotten used to the weight? It didn't seem very heavy to me...

The 16610 is my favorite Rolex of the past 30 years, which is why I wear one everyday, so I guess you know my vote.

The good thing about the smaller dial on the 16600 was that it brought the date window closer to the edge of the dial. The new model's date wheel is too far inset, which looks a little odd without a cyclops.
