Dial Help

Since 1997, I have worn a "bronze" 18K/SS GMT Master II with the "root beer" bezel, reference 16713. My eyes are to the point where I cannot see the hands against the bronze dial. It is definitely my eyes as my wife has no issue reading the watch, and my ophthalmologist suggests I need lens replacements. I need more contrast between the hands and the dial to read the time.

So I plan to purchase another Rolex and give my GMT Master II to my daughter. I would prefer to have the date window, but the day of the week, while nice, is not required. I either need gold hands against a black dial or dark hands against a light dial. I also do not like the Jubilee band, having worn a Datejust with such a band in the early 1990s. I also do not like Roman or Arabic numerals on the dial nor do I like the wide "sticks" of the new Datejust models. I have tried the slate Serti that was available on the Submariner, and the contrast was pretty good.

That being said, I am getting away from the "professional" watches as I no longer need the multiple time-zone keeping of the GMT Master II due to my much decreased travel. So I am looking at the Datejust and Day-Date models.


My questions:

1) Is there any good way to narrow the selection based on dial and hands?

2) My wife and I like the MoP dial faces and the lighter versions of those dials make it simple for me to tell time. Any way to filter the Rolex catalog based on MoP? I also like the onyx face, so same question there.

3) Best place to see a lot of models in either Nashville or Atlanta? I am aware of Capetown Diamond in Atlanta for the used market but I am quite out of touch with other dealers, both new and used.

I think you can find something in the Datejust line. Maybe a DJ-II as I think the dial is a touch larger (but maybe not). Nice stick dial withe your choice of bezel... I'd look on line at the Rokex site first and get an idea and then call the local dealers to see if they have what you are interested in, in stock.

I have the same problem in that I don't wear glasses all of the time yet, but find it difficult to see the time on a lot of watches. Unfortunately I had to sell my Zenith Daytona earlier this year for that reason (still miss it !!!).

The 2 I have now which I can see fairly clearly are an Explorer 2 Polar 16570 although the red GMT hand can get mixed up with the minute hand a bit with my sight...........and a Sub 14060M 2-liner, which I must say is very easy to see the time on.

I am not a DJ fan personally but hopefully you find something you like and can see the time :-)

As someone who has had poor eyesight all my life (Best corrected visual acuity OS 6/60 OD 6/36) I would definitely reccomend a white dial, as I find it clearer across the whole range of Rolexes which feature them. Next up I fancy a polar Explorer 2. I personally find dark and silver/ rhodium dials the worst to view.

I would think an EXP2 or a sub. If you can't read those two, it might be time to think about another brand.
