Do you think I should...
Hi guys, I was wondering if I should make this addition to my collection, basically between what I have and what I will have gotten by June my collection will look like this:
AP ceramic diver PP 5712 PP 5167R PP 5711 And a made to order watch from an independent in WG, that one should make a serious incoming, even if I already paid 70% upfront for the order I won't say what it is, but it's going to be the pinnacle of my collection. So basically 5 watches, have other lower end watches but let's not count them in. I won't have a single watch which costs less than 20K, which means that I won't take any to go to the beach or for a swim, I know the diver can swim but having had the case crack once I would be afraid to have it happen again, so I am considering a Daytona C, probably white dial, it makes me think a little of the Paul Newman one. Also my 5 watch collection is very well thought, and watches I really love and which will do great in a rotation, I have thought about it for a very long time, and have bothered you enough with many threads about these watches that I am getting, which has helped me to really choose the ones I wanted and that will at 99% be keepers for me. Do you think that I will probably not wear it enough with the ones I have and will flip it? I went through the buying and selling phase and would prefer not going through that again, even if I don't loose money, no need to fuel the addiction... Sorry to make such a huge thread about basically "should I get a Daytona or not?" but I like things to be clear. And if it was possible I would like the thread not to be moved in the Rolex section, it's more about the watches I have and am getting than the Daytona, plus the Rolex posters don't really know me whereas many of you guys here do... Anyways thanks in advance for your thoughts and ideas about this. |

Based upon some of your previous posts regarding Rolex, I'm surprised. But if this is your 'future collection' (you mention June--of 2017 I assume), may I suggest you get the watches first. Going by history things can take a little longer than expected.
Not sure what you own now, if you want to toss in a Daytona, go for it. If you're looking for a beach beater, grab a Sub or GMT--even better water watches. I'm confused as to the quandary here? Either way good luck. |

Very simple Paul, I have the AP, 5712, the 5167R is paid in full and waiting for me in CH, going there in 3-4 weeks, the independent is paid at 70%, and delivery date is May 2017, the only one which isn't either paid in full or in part is the 5711 and Daytona if I take one. Both 5711 and Daytona have estimated arrival first half of 2017..
To be honest it's the only Rolex In SS I find comfortable, can't stand the subs, GMT's and all, had them and find them horrible to wear since I got my first 5712... I didn't want to add a watch but I realize I don't have a watch I would wear when 1 time a year we go spend 3-4 weeks in Asia, or for sports but vacation is the biggest reason, I know WR is only 100m, but I think it is more than sufficient, before my BLNR was my vacation watch, has the same WR and it was more than fine |

Good news--doesn't sound like it's incoming until 2017, so plenty of time to change your mind |

I think this is a reasonable thread. For me, I a few pieces I wear without regard. ie a sea dweller, gmt, tudor.
If you feel like the daytona c is going to be that piece for you, go for it. You may be better off with a sea dweller or sub though, but that's for you to decide.

I'm curious to know which independent you're talking about as well!
That said I think the DaytonaC would be the perfect SS Rolex to use as a "beater"/vacation watch. But I would wait until you get your other watches first because tastes change over time and by then the market premiums won't be as high. However, if you can get one at retail now then go for it ps is the 5711 steel or rg? |

Thanks guys, yes it is going to be here in 2017, maybe there are tougher "vacation watches", but for me it's fine, and comfy as well as very cool looking, can't stand subs and other Rolexes like them, they look nice but it's a pain to wear.
Well it's not Dufour but you're in for a treat I think, should be one of the best incoming threads ever made here from a very small independent Anyways thanks for your answers guys, the Daytona c white dial is ordered, it will arrive in 2017 like the 5711 at my AD in CH |

With Roger and Paul's PP/RM incomings I'm looking forward to this.. Back to your quandary why not just use the ceramic diver? Your previous issue as you said wasn't the result of a knock it was a freak accident and not something to expect in the future, also from memory one of the main reasons for the ceramic was its ability to withstand scratches and your concern with them, surely that means your ideal beach/pool watch you already have in your collection. |

Yes but the fact that the ceramic cracked for no apparent reason, made me think that if I swim and hit it on a rock or on the side of the pool, it'll cost me a fortune, I find the Daytona much better suited for a vacation watch, a big scratch won't really bother me, and almost no risk of damaging it seriously, the AP doesn't scratch but as I learned can crack... I think getting the Daytona is a safe choice. If you decide you don't like it, you could probably still sell it for at least what you paid. I know you said you would be scared to wear the ceramic AP on vacation, but have you considered getting it insured? I bet your premium would be $500 a year. It would take 25 years to pay more than $12400 (MSRP for the Daytona).

I think any collection could use a Rolex, especially as a tool watch, so I think it would be a wise choice.
Having said that, your collection has purposefully moved beyond Rolex, and you have comfort issues with Rolex bracelets. If you can't physically wear a Sub, or GMT, a Daytona is not going to wear a lot different. No, I don't think Rolex is the way go. That's a firm no on the Daytona. You need to look to a high end brand sports model, one that has the prestige, movement, and exclusivity to match your collection - something like a 5167 in steel, but you already have the gold one. The VC Overseas for example. Not saying it has to be VC, but you should look to high end brands and what their sport models have to offer. Breguet, Blanpain, etc. |

Daytona sounds like a good add Arnaud. Who cares about if you end up flipping? Hard to lose money on one bought at an AD. Rolex is my favorite brand so I wouldn't be caught without one...but I don't seem to get that vibe from you so I can understand your hesitation. Personally, I would use your diver. I don't imagine you'll crack it again |

Daytona C sounds like the right move. I have the RG and prefer full subdials rather than subdial rings so I might pass on the SS.

Thanks my friend, think for me it is perfect, a watch I like enough to wear and which I don't care about to stress if there is a big scratch or scratches, a real "light beater". You have 156515? Or full gold? Had it in ivory dial, but wasn't big on RG back then

It will be a nice collection once all is arrived.
I know your ceramic AP case broke one time but I highly doubt it will break going for a swim unless you are doing olympic backflips off a diving board or white water rafting. I say skip the daytona and make the AP your "Beater". |
