Old Rolex explorer

I'm assuming this is fake as the owner never mentioned it nor wore it.

both my Rolex are modern and bought from stores.

FYI this is not for sale I just would like to know more about it
It certainly feels old I would guess 20-30yrs plus

The box also feels real old but I have never seen such a box and even googling I couldn't find one similar

I think I'll just take it into town but wondered if anyone could give their opinion?

Thanks as ever

That box is not uncommon. Google "60s rolex rectangular box" and check out the images

Looks like an authentic 1016 to me, any better shots of the dial?

Wow that thing is clean! Theblines on the case look great for its age and the dial has developed a beautiful patina, a beautiful watch. Not a fake. Doesn't appear to be polished. A collectors dream really.

I'm sure this is how long is a piece of string but what would you say the worth is?

I love the aging on it and my first fault was surely they weren't making fakes like this 30+ years ago but I didn't want to look like an idiot !!

It is so small compared to my GMT2 I've tried wearing it and it's super light hate to say it but it's too light..

Thanks for your info by the way

You are in the UK I guess it could be a 5500 explorer as well. If you pop off the strap the model will be in between the lugs.

I think it is a 5500 my research suggesting with a 1520 or 1530 movement

I'll keep googling for now and maybe pop it into a good dealer in London

Thanks again

Congrats on the find. It looks like it's in pristine condition and should command a premium.
