Watch Rental?

Has anyone used a service like this https://www.elevenjames.com/ to try out a watch before buying it? Looks pretty expensive, but if you're willing to pay $149 per month you can pretend a Datejust is yours, $299. Daytona, $800 a Sky Dweller (and plenty of other watches Rolex and many other brands). Somehow I want to own what I wear, even if I will never get to have the really upper end watches.

BUT... Im glad there is a market for that!

And i hope that market will attract all those people who would be wearing a Fake Rolex otherwise.

So although most of us would never use it, its very important it exists

Elevenjames, with the right prices, could be the Fake industry worst nightmare.

people lease cars that they couldn't afford to buy

for someone that way inclined, i am sure leasing a watch would appeal to them as well

Bingo! My thoughts exactly. It shocks me how many people live beyond their means. In my line of work, I see it every day. People buy expensive houses and lease expensive cars that they can't really afford.

I have no idea of the target market for this service, but I would wager that the market does not include many people trying to live beyond their means.

I am fairly certain no one but you has looked long at the site. It is not a $150 gets you a Tudor for a one night stand type or arraingment. . .

They are clearly marketing to people who have money and want to try alot of different watches at a convenience. You just have to pay for it. Even then not so bad if you never expected to keep them too long anyway. $800 a month takes 4+ years to pay off a Skydweller or Playtona.

Or one can pay $800 a month for 4 years and get to wear a Skydweller, Playtona, 3 Pateks, 3 APs, 2 ALSs, and 6 more $40k plus watches. Doesn't seem too bad a deal when you put it that way

In a weird way it's like buying a fake Rolex. You're pretending to own something that isn't yours.
Then again, if you're interested in putting across an impression of status (Look he wears a different high end watch every month, he must be rich!)...

agree this is very much the case but people do it with cars so i am sure there is a market for watches as well!

I just checked them out, it's 800 per month to access a Skydweller, and there is a minimum term for the "membership,' probably a year at least. Stupid.

The service is not for me, but:

I would not be surprised to find that there are folks who buy a Skydweller, trade it a year later, and lose more than $9,600.

They might never have to stare at a line item "It cost you $800 per month to wear that watch". Instead it was seen as "You can get this $Y watch for $X and your watch".

Maybe ok to rent if it is a "hard to find" model that you want to try before buying but I prefer to buy.

Makes sense to me. Try it out, get your yaya's out, then give it back, and hang on to your $20k or whatever. Exactly like luxury car, short term rental. Can't day i'd do it myself though.

Its an interesting idea but the numbers don't make sense. Maybe if the prices were 50% lower and the monthly minimum was 1-3 months.

Better to buy preowned and take 6 months to "love it or leave it". Then either way (love or hate) when you sell onward you don't lose anything like 6 months of rental costs.
