AD called about Daytono...advice...
So last week my local Rolex Dealer called to see if I was interested in a Milguass, I wasn't and said to please call me when you have a SS Daytona. I've bought two from this dealer within the past two years and figured my chances of getting a Daytona SS are slim. The first one I bought was the Explorer II, second was the LV Submariner. This morning she called offering me a SS Daytona. Of course I pulled out the AMEX rambled off the number, she said it’d be in Wednesday. I still feel like its surreal and I’ll believe it when I see it. However, I don’t really have the $9900 laying around to spend on a watch. But, for the past 12 years, I’ve wanted a Rolex Daytona. I can pay for it out of my personal savings which is not much more than double the cost of the watch. I’m thinking of selling at least one of the others. I really like the LV Sub…don’t want to part with it. The Explorer II is not worth as much as the Sub and my girlfriend bought it for me. I think I can convince her to let me sell it though. I also have a 1966 Oyster perpetual…probably bring in $1000-$1500. Ideally I should find a way to make MORE money this year, but I don’t see my income going up 10K in the next few weeks. What would you do?
Thanks,

As long you can insure it DO IT!!!
With interest at around 3% on your money in the bank you can wear it on the wrist and enjoy it....as long as you take care of it you will get your money back and probably more!!!

The very fact that you are asking means, to me, that you are not in love with the watch all that much. Pass on it. My

Well, if you have definitely decided to buy the Daytona, sell the 1966 OP. I agree that your GF needs to make the decision on the Expy II. If you get in a financial bind and love the Daytona, then you might need to sell the LV Sub.

Thats great news about the Daytona Call!
I would probably sell the Explorer II and Oyster Perpetual.. but let your GF suggest selling the Exp II, otherwise she aint going to be happy! |

I say don't buy it. You are going to spend half of all that you have saved on a watch. Yes it's the SS Daytona and you've been waiting years for it, but when all is said and done, it's a watch and it's half of your savings. If you are financially stable and have other assets then go for it.

sorry, posted too late...they're your watches and each has a different meaning to you; so you're the one who needs to make the tough call.

It's really a personal decision but I would say get the Daytona - you've been waiting 12 years for this call... and the Daytona will always hold its value if you really needed to sell it in the future (you may likely pick up some interest too). As for the other watches, personally I'd sell the OP and Explorer II.

Daytona trumps everything. I have owned cars, golf clubs, other watches, a huge house in my 66 years. NOTHING ever gave me the daily gratification that I get when I click on the 116520. Of course this is about material things..........my family and my cairn terrier are the most important things in my life.

the money thing will sort it self out-you are not "spending" your savings- just converting it from cash to another asset that can be converted back to cash @ another time, if need be.

Ed, I was dealing with the same situation last Monday so, my advice to you is go ahead and do what you have to get the Daytona and if your AD is willing to let go for $9,900.00 you can't go wrong with it. The Sub and the Explorer you can get it at anytime but, the Daytona is not that easy as you know. Go for it man.

I would not even suggest selling the Explorer II... I mean your girl friend bought it for you. Sell the OP and the LV.

Well.....what have you been saving your money for ???
If you've wanted the Daytona for 12 years, and now you have it....Good for you.. As for selling something else... I don't know. You have 3 now, and the Daytona just makes 4 - do you really have some need to convert these assets into cash. This sounds like more of a mind-set than a need. If you were able to save the money in the first place, you are light years ahead of 90% of the rest of the population, and with a good plan and determination, it will be back up there again..

Go for the daytona! I had a smiliar situation earlier this year and ended up selling my GMT II (which I cherished) to help pay for the Daytona. Don't get me wrong, the GMT is a great watch, but I've never regretted the decision. I waited about as long as you did and was ready to sell a kidney to get it!

Sell the sub. Youe need the money and I personally wouldn't sell the explorer you got form your girlfriend. Could really hurt her feelings. Or at least sell both the sub and explorer explaining to her that you would love to keep the explorer and just sell the sub, but you need the money to get the Daytona.
Your really can't sell the explorer she got you and keep the sub. Both sub and explorer is easy to get later when more money are around.

It sounds to me that while you have the money to pay for this watch, you really can't afford it nonetheless. Personally, I vote in favor of fiscal responsibility in this case. The Daytona is a nice watch of course, but it is not a necessity in the same sense that say, getting healthcare, would be. There have been circumstances like this for me in the past where I have stretched and purchased a watch I couldn't really afford and I later regretted it. Although it is not going to be the popular decision, I say wait until you can afford it. Best of luck.

Since you've already bought the Daytona, then sell the one that had the opposite color dial, unless you have alot of sentimental value for either one.

IMO, I would sell the EXP II. Maybe your girlfriend can understand if you explain the value of the LV.

I'd flip all of the other watches and get your girlfriend to "give" you the Daytona.
This way cash flow is kept good and the Daytona can be the new improved sentimental value item.

I don't plan on flipping the Daytona...working on getting the girlfriend to undestand the situation and I think she will...I've bought her purses that she no longer uses and I told her to SELL them...she know I've wanted the Daytona for a while...it may be a little work, but I'll keep pushing for her to let it go. Also, I'm not in any financial hardship...although I'm dipping into my life savings, I'm fine...and all my finances are managed.
Thanks for all your advice.

My opinion would depend on if you have money in places other than savings and how much it takes you to live. If this is literally half of what you have with no retirement or anything i'd pass. What if you get sick, hurt, or god forbid something else. 10k in the bank isn't going to go very far.
If you sell the Daytona you may have a hard time getting it again later though because the AD will probably assume (rightly) that you flipped the last one. Also, they don't seem to be raking in 12k like they use to. Check the completed sales on ebay for them and look in the FS section here. Several that are "like new" haven't been able to fetch $10.5k Basically, I would wait until the watch will be a blessing. If you see now as being that time, who are we to tell you otherwise. But if you're asking, I wouldn't do it, and I've built up a considerable amount of savings on top of having no payments including my home. Go with your gut.

So i have a question for everyone...would you spend half of your entire savings on the Daytona? If you have more than 20k saved then maybe you can't really relate so lets say you have 50k in savings, and the the SS Daytona cost 25k, or you have 100k and the Daytona cost 50K...would you do it? Just curious.
