How long it took to stop caring
I recently bought a new DaytonaC almost 1 month ago. Wore this watch about 10 times. Today I decided to put it away and wear my DJ II
As I was cleaning the watch and looking at it closely, I found some micro abrasion on the bracelet and clasp. Nothing major or deep scratches luckily, but it still it annoys and bothers me. I love this watch and it's my favorite of all. My question is how long it took for you not to care about minor micro abrasion and scratches on your watch?? |

well, i bought preowned. And the day I wore my sub out was to go to the AD to buy my brother his omega speedmaster for his 30th birthday. I work in a hospital so there is no telling when I dinged the lug. (I usually wear a beater to the hospital) Tiny ding, but now I know. Watches are for wearing. This is partially one of the reasons I passed on a mint with stickers still attached 14060M earlier in the year. It wouldve been very painful to put the first ding/scratch on it.

I tell myself that the dings and scratches add character to my watch and call it a day.

I was bothered when I first noticed desk diving marks on my clasp. Kept looking at the marks day after day then realized I simply had to just wear the watch and enjoy it. I have the mindset where if I wanted to keep it in brand new condition, it is better to leave the watch in the display case at the AD rather then owning one. I use the markings to call the watch my own.

Not too long...
Still looks good like this to me: Evidence of my first mark is crown side, 6 o'clock link #1. Saddest day of my life. You'll be fine :)

I'm so proud of what this watch and I have been through, I don't know if I'll even have them polish her up for me during first service in a few years. Enjoy that Daytona, I hope it will serve you as famously as mine has for me.

if you wear the watch ever, swirly's and micro abrasions are inevitable. I tend to be very careful with my watches so dings and serious scratches will always get to me. I don't care of it's a my Seiko skx007 or my Day Date 40.
I try not to obsess over anything but I always practice pretty high wrist awareness. But the swirly's make almost no difference to me at all. If it really bothers you, PCLs are not the way to go lol! |

PCL's seem to catch micro scratches with the changing wind. No matter how careful one might be with them. The first one I got on my Bluesy Sub bugged the heck out of me. But that was short lived. Now, it is what it is. I try to be as careful as I can while at the same time not trying to be overly obsessive about it. A balance if you will. They're meant to be worn. At least mine are.

I can't remember a time when scratches and dings in the metal bothered me.
It's a different story with crystal scratches. Fortunately most of my watches these days have sapphire crystals. Don't get me wrong. I'd prefer pristine watches, but I also prefer to wear my watches, which means they're going to show signs of wear. It's unavoidable.

I started my proper watch-wearing career with a Rolesor Datejust in 2005, and I did fret over the scratches it would pick up, particularly on the polished lugs where they were a lot more visible than elsewhere on the watch. What helped me get over the whole idea of worrying about scratches on watches, interestingly enough, was when in 2008 I bought my first Jaeger-LeCoultre, a Reverso.
Now, JLC use what's called a mirror finish on the lugs and caseback of the Reverso, and it truly lives up to its name - you can see things reflected clear as day on the flip-side of that case. However, it also means that you can scratch this watch by doing pretty much anything. If you think PCLs are scratch magnets, they're nothing on a JLC Reverso finish. By the end of my first day I had hairlines appearing on the case, and more and more appeared over the first couple of weeks. I quickly realised that every time I wore my Reverso I was going to have to accept that scratches were going to appear, more or less no matter how careful I was or what I did. And that was that really. I just grew to accept them on that piece, and then became more relaxed about them on all my collection as I've bought and sold other pieces in the years since. You care less and less with every additional scratch that goes on. Go out there and make some more

0.000000000000001 seconds.
During the first service in about 9 years they'll polish out.

It's been 3 months for me and I still look at what new scratches I've made on the PCLs. I am wondering the same thing myself...

First time out with my TT DJII someone threw me a bullet pass with a football. Clasp immediately scrapped like crazy. I was thinking about how much those scratches were going to bother me. They do kind of but at least I caught that ball.

Seriously, normal wear and tear is not an issue for me. It's not a museum piece, sitting idle while people stand there and examine it in detail. On a living, breathing human being in the real world they aren't even noticed. Think about it, have you ever casually seen someone wearing a Rolex and zoomed right in on all the scratches, or were you more just like, "Hey, nice watch that guy's wearing."

Worried about scratches on your wearer? Easy answer: buy two. One to wear and beat up, the other to pull out of the box when you want to appreciate untarnished beauty!

24-48 hrs, I hit my wrist on literally everything. my constellation looks like I went through a fricken war and i've had it a few months. I'm scared to death of this sapphire crystal because I know i'm going to blow it up eventually. If i was worried about scratches, I wouldn't own a watch.
