Rolex Dial Tolerances

Gents,

Just wondering your experience on Rolex Dials especially the ones with the sunburst effect.

I have personally seen dials that looks like they are scratched with clear imperfections on them. I'm just wondering how that is possible on watches that are so expensive. I have seen this issue on HEAPS of dials now with the sunburst.

I own some $200 watches with Sunburst affect and they don't have these inconsistencies. My IWCs don't have any of these inconsistent sun bursting lines they are all uniform and in sunlight they dont look like they are scratched.

Look the the pics below. Clearly you can see the brushing is uneven on some dials and in the sun they look horrible. My nephew even pointed out with one of mine that "hey there is a scratch on the dial". When the sun hits it at certain angles or any light it does look like the dials is scratched.

Here is another picture of a members DD40. Clearly you can see inconsistencies with the naked eye on the dial.



Have you guys ever looks closely at your dials in the sunlight at different angles? I'm sure there are heaps of us with the same problem.

Nope, never. Should be solved by RSC. It looks demaged to me.

The above is not my watch. Its a members picture that I noticed the marks on it.

The fellow in that thread is even worse. Its a line all the way through the dial and AD is saying that is within tolerances? Thats laughable.

I would throw that challenge out there to fellow TRF members. Ive seen so many examples of this now I bet there would be a ton of ppl with this issue

My green Sub has similar marks when viewed under a very strong light at 10x loupe.

It's obvious that it's a production issue and not a handling issue because the text is printed cleanly over the marks.

The sunburst effect is essentially is a series of controlled scratches in an outward pattern.

Inconsistencies are to be expected and I believe Rolex has a 30cm naked eye tolerance rule for determining quality standards.

30cm? I can see the marks on the dial quite easily.

I suggest you guys look at it under the sun. I've had too many dial issues like this and on top of the line models too like the DD40 and Platona. Watches that shouldn't have this.

If my nephew can point it out and its clearly visible in the sunlight at over 30cm these should not be in tolerances. My nephew is 12 yrs old!!!!! and he has no clue on watches and he clearly pointed it out.

The problem is you cant see it in all angles but when you do see it its very very noticeable. It actually looks like a dial scratch.

If watches costing 1/100th of the price can produce nice and clean sunburst why cant Rolex. That is quite unbelievable.

I have two very small marks at the bottom of my dial near six and seven o clock. They are only noticed with a loupe in bright light. I have a small line like scratch in between the crown and 5 minute marker. This can usually only be seen with a loupe in bright light and you need to twist and turn the watch. Today I was in the park in very hot bright light and with great effort holding the watch up to my eyes close (no loupe) I caught a glimpse of the scratch like mark. It was so tiny and faint I could just about make it out. It took a while to find but at the right angle it appeared but quite close to my face ever so faint barley visable.

I had started a previous thread about this. (Calling all op 39 owners) What made me commitment today was seeing that it is not just me but this guy with the day date and there is another thread with a guy having the same issue on a date just.

Like the other guy with the date just thread the two AD told them that it was all in tolerance. RSC in st James London told me my watch was ok and emailed this to me also.

Off to my own investigations I head off too 4 London and Kent AD,s and look at 8 watches with sunburst dials. Under a loupe I find 6 of them having similar imperfections to my watch. One two tone DJ41 champagne dial had a little between the crown and 5 minute marker worse than mine. The ironic thing is the same AD showed me another DJ41 the dial was close to perfect.

The guy that commented about his green dial sub confirmed to me Rolex although having great quality in some areas needs to be more careful in others.

I find it almost impossible to post pics from my tablet nowadays due to size restrictions regarding the server upgrade. It was a necessary upgrade however. Although the issue on my dial can't be caught on my camera lens not good enough.

If anyone wants proof I own the watch just look at WUW for May just before the server upgrade I have posted there daily with pics.
