Officers down Orlando FL PD & Orange Co Sheriffs Dept

Master Sergeant Deborah Clayton was shot and killed today when she encountered a wanted murder suspect in the parking lot of a Walmart at the intersection of Princeton Street and John Young Parkway.

The subject was wanted for murdering his pregnant ex-girlfriend and for shooting her new boyfriend three months prior. After shooting Sergeant Clayton, the man carjacked a vehicle and fled the scene. A captain from the Orange County Sheriff's Office spotted the vehicle moments later and was shot at as he got behind it. The suspect continued to flee and remains at large.

During the ensuing search an Orange County sheriff's deputy was killed in a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Pine Hills Road and Balboa Drive when another vehicle turned in front of his motorcycle. The deputy's name has not yet been released.

Sergeant Clayton had served with the Orlando Police Department for 17 years. She is survived by her husband and two children.

Godspeed to you MSsgt Clayton, bless your family and fellow officers.
Also Godspeed to the Orange CO Sheriffs deputy who was killed while assisting his fellow officer.
Such a sad and tragic event.

This one hit too close to home. My nephew is an Officer in that area of Florida, and I was a little frantic when I heard the news. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Cop414 (Tim) for these reminders of those who sacrifice their lives for us. I can't imagine the pain he goes through every time he has to post.

Thanks HS, my face quivers from both sadness as well as anger when I make these threads but I feel that it's important to remind everyone of the sacrifices that are made so that people in this country sleep safe every night.
May your nephew have a safe tour each and every day.

Tim, thank you for posting these threads. It is so important to honor those that serve. I am so saddened that it seems everyday we learn of another officer being put to rest.
May the Gods bless them.

Sheriffs Deputy killed during this incident has been named-

Deputy First Class Norman Lewis was killed in a motorcycle crash while participating in the search of the subject who had just murdered Master Sergeant Debra Clayton, of the Orlando Police Department.

Sergeant Clayton had been shot and killed when she encountered a wanted murder suspect in the parking lot of the Walmart on Princeton Street. The subject had fled in a carjacked vehicle and shot at an Orange County deputy who located the vehicle. During the ensuing search, Deputy Lewis' motorcycle collided with a vehicle that turned in front of him at the intersection of Pine Hills Road and Balboa Drive.

The subject who murdered Sergeant Clayton remains at large.

Deputy Lewis had served with the Orange County Sheriff's Office for 11 years.

Godspeed to you Deputy Lewis.

Another needless tragedy and my condolences go out to both the officer's family and her department colleagues.

Seems to me (and I could be way-off base here) is that if the majority of these 'suspects' simply cooperated with law enforcement officials when stopped for questioning, countless shootings could be avoided. Trying to flee and running down the road, creating car chases that endanger other motorists, and pulling-out concealed weapons on peace officers doesn't quite equate to the relentless 'life matters' issues/platforms that have permeated our daily news. Bottom line is that many of these tragic events could have been avoided via cooperation with peace officers. Besides, if there was inappropriate action on the part of the police, it would eventually come out in a court of law or through the media.

I have been stopped and questioned at times by the police (usually for being in the wrong place at the wrong time) and while it initially pissed me off as a 3rd degree measure, I eventually came to understand their motives as a process of elimination to get to the real culprits. After one particularly dubious 'questioning' scenario, a municipal police officer later apologized for the incident. He showed a lot of class. Better to be safe than sorry in my book. If you've got nothing to hide there's no reason to be fleeing (or pulling a weapon on law enforcement).

It's a disgrace at the way police officers are being killed. When police officers aren't safe where does that leave the rest of society.

I hope justice is served on this guy, and swiftly. This perp has hurt enough people for his lifetime.

RIP to the fallen officers and their loved ones.

I hope I am not overstepping my boundaries on this forum by posting this, but here goes.

Loyd had been arrested 20 times in Orange County since 1994, according to court records.
Why the hell is this guy still on the streets? How many chances does someone get before we say enough is enough?

Now we are left sitting here mourning the death of a person who spent her entire career serving the people of her community. A husband is going to bed without his wife, and children without their mother. Senseless.

Brian,
While I feel what you are saying and I certainly do not disagree with you these threads often get closed once political views creep in. Let's try to keep it as a memorial thread my friend.
PS My daughter used to live in Philly, great city!

I certainly do not want to get this thread locked, as my goal was not to make this political at all. I will gladly edit my initial post if you would like.

I am actually in the suburbs, but yes, Philadelphia certainly has it's positives. Lots of history and great food! Sadly, it also has it's negatives. But that is another discussion that would most likely get this thread locked as well

No problem brother, no edit needed. My daughter last lived in Ambler, we used to pig out at the Dining Car, still go there from time to time for the French Onion soup, only soup that I've ever had to cut with a knife!

Condolences to the family and friends. And so thankful for everybody who draws the thin blue line and keeps those idiots somewhat in check. No words could make this tolerable. I'm so sorry.
