IWC vs JLC

Hello guys
I have been a Rolex and Pam guy.New to these watch, need some help from you all..
I am looking at JLC Master Compressor vs IWC Portuguese 7 Day.
Which one will you pick? Also which one will have a better resell?

Can’t stand that JLC range, and the IWC costs more than its worth, and wears like a dinner plate.
Beyond that, as it’s your tastes and wrist that only matter, go try them on or make sure the seller has a solid returns policy if you have to buy blind.

I have a JLC Master Geographic in RG:



and an IWC PC:



and love them both. Both keep great time. I typically wear the JLC as a dress watch and the IWC in my regular rotation as an every day watch.

I do not own JLC, but they are incredible watches. I was looking at the Master and Geophysic collections for their clean look and incredible in-house movements. The later will have an update coming up soon with a metal bracelet which will be interchangeable without tools, kinda cool. I do own 2 IWCs, 377714 and 510202. The Pilot has I think ETA modified movement. The Portugieser comes with hand wound 8 day movement with power reserve on the back. Both 43 mm, great watches.

JLC for me.

I have a Navy Seals Diving Alarm, cool watch, I like this one better as it balances between dressy and casual better.

I also have a 7 Day Portugese. It's a very nice watch but it wears too light for my taste. I also find it too much on the dressy side, so I rarely wear it. This is changeable of course, but the reverse strap conceptually bugs me as well. 7-day reserve is cool though, and helpful if not on a winder and not a daily wear.

Of those 2 IWC but I found that it wears really big.

I've had a JLC with those same pushers and crown and imo they must be the least subtle and annoying design of a crown/pusher ever (U-boat aside). I felt they added 10mm to the how the watch wore and never stopped digging into back of my hand once I had any flex in my wrist whatsoever.

The IWC is a solid and timeless design but as others have said it's a big watch. That said you mention PAMs so you shouldn't have a problem with the IWC's size.

Do also consider that both of those will see huge depreciation if you buy anywhere near the retail price. The flip side of that is that I think there opportunities to pick up the Portuguese at a decent price used and in the grey market now.

I'd go with the IWC. If you can pull off a PAM, you will have no problem with the 7 Day.
I have the same watch and love it. It goes well both with casual or formal wear. The 7 day power reserve is also great if you wear your watches in rotation and don't use a winder.

Just keep in mind that there are 2 different references in circulation. 5001 and 5007 series. The 5007 is the newer caliber with the double barrel movement and operates at 28,800 vph now. The 5001 is discontinued, but dealers seem to still have them in stock. Price seems to be about the same BNIB, so opt for the newer reference if you go this route.

I love both brands but of those two models, definitely the IWC as it is more iconic and versatile.
