That 687 is a stunner. If only it came in a Luminor case

Thanks for sharing. I thing they're gorgeous, but the writing on the bezel bothers me. I get all the history and all, though it's what we look at constantly. Just my 2 pennies.

Show me the proof it was used in service like that.

The 3646 case back and bezel are the exact same screw size. They basically screw over the dial. Very dangerous to damage the precious 3646 dial as the edges can get ground by the twisting action. What likely happened is that someone had an extra case back and just put it on the front.

Not saying it doesn't look good, just not the "original 3646".

Just google it there's plenty of reference to it 3646 watches with dodecagonal (12-sided) bezels bearing “Officine Panerai – Brevettato” engravings are/were believed to be the early prototypes, specifically produced for demonstration purposes.

There are two very prominent pieces worth mentioning. One of them has a beautifully faded Radiomir Panerai dial and the other has a “California” dial.

According to the book “Panerai – Una storia Italiana“, the first Ref. 3646 watches were delivered to G. Panerai e Figlio in 1940.

Panerai stick their history you should know this and need to really look into it in more detail before commenting incorrectly.

You just said it yourself. Demonstration purposes. I didn't comment incorrectly. Those watches likely never saw service. We are splitting hairs I guess. In the world of these vintage pieces anything could have happened as nothing was documented fully. I guess no one can prove anything definitively. The ones proven to have been worn in service didn't have those caseback bezels.

Let's try to not get defensive in our posts here.

See my second post they did see war as 3646A neither of us were there to know but we can agree they are historically absolutely correct 100% at least - just enjoy it it's utterly beautiful arguebly,oh and also dimensionally correct too it's not as thick as say the 448/449 etc.

Not much mention of the profile of this watch. Can you confirm it is the same case profile as a 424/425/448/449? I know the bezel is thicker on this 685/687 but what about the rest?

Nice review.

And here's more proof

The 685/687 are inspired by a special Radiomir from the 1930's ref3646A. Historically, this is the watch that really kicked it off for Panerai. Since Rolex had already patented a water proof watch, Panerai had the cases and movements made for them by Rolex SA. The exact date of when this took place is hard to decipher but we know it was between 1936 and 1938.
These vintage watches were very special and rare because they are the ones that went into war and witnessed war. It is, therefore, that we know the Type A also as the “Warbirds”.This is by all intents and purposes the first Panerai watch and the birth of the Radiomir as we know it!

i think you're in trouble (need to buy it) this is the thickness or thinness ;)
687 first then 449 then 687 again to compare I don't know exact measurements though but visually you can see it's thinner too

Man....it does look thinner. Not a good year for me to buy a brand new watch, but I might have too. Guess I'll call the boutique tomorrow. Doh!

Thanks for the profile pics!
