How do you lay your watch?

So Ive read a few articles lately about laying your watch in certain positions like crown side down, opposite side down or flat will cause the timing of the watch to change.

So my question, Will the watch eventually return back to the previous state before you placed the watch in this certain position? Am I missing something?

It seems that this trick is only a band-aid for a watch that needs to be regulated..

Positioning will only have minor effects on your timing, especially with the newer references. I would rather take into account the watch's tendencies when setting, i.e., if it runs a little fast than set it a little behind, and vice versa, then mess with putting it in a certain position.

I like to place the watch crown up, so however that affects the timing, so be it.

This is from Rolex but not all watches respond exactly like this so you have to try different positions yourself.

Rolex of all watch companies calls the crown "winding button"

I think given Rolex' history and reputation, if they called it a "little windy thing" who am I to question them?

to be fair, if they did call it a crown, someone would probably get all confused since there are Rolex crowns all over the watch. Some guy would probably put the bracelet crown up, and wonder why it wasn't regulating like they said.

Remarkable, I just lay mine on it's crown, so that the case doesn't acquire marks. It runs perfectly, seems to keep perfect time.
Now I know that's because it may be running a bit fast!
Thank you! I would never have read all the instructions

I have the newest movements in my Explorer and SubC. Positioning is a great way to keep my watches running almost perfectly on time. I can go on for months and months without setting my watch, keeping it within 3 seconds of atomic time just by positioning (mostly crown up to compensate for the daytime gain).

Yes the rate will only change while the watch is in that position. It is just a trick to change the timing a bit. Although I don't think it is as effective on the latest movements.

Still, my watch runs -2 sec.day and I keep it dial up at night just so it'll run a little faster. Even if only in my head.

a) Wear your watch in a normal wearing pattern for a few months.

b) Is it running fast or slow?

c) Check it on a Timegrapher to find the best corrective position based on b).

Use this position when you are not wearing it.

Let the crown luck or tightness. I screw in the crown until my finger no longer easily rotates it and leave it there. I have to say Rolex Daytona 116506 is the closest thing that is ever upright position while other watches have their crown sit at different angles to lock

On the side - maybe I'm superstitious but my GMT keeps excellent time this way, total drift over two months was 10s. That's one minute per year, about as good as a quartz! (And way better than my car)

My wife always puts hers either face down (right on the cyclops) or on the crown (on a tile surface.) Will either of these cause damage or wear?
