To SubC or not to SubC? That is my question.
Perhaps my favorite thing about this hobby of luxury wristwatches has been the journey. My tastes have changed so much over the years as has my need to own a box full of wristwatches. When I first entered the hobby, quantity was the name of the game. The more I matured, the fewer watches I kept and the more quality meant to me. I have whittled my collection down to three timepieces. Much thought went into my three pieces I decided to keep. I wanted a work piece, a play/casual piece, and sports watch. Here is where I ended up;
1) Rolex Datejust 16200 (D serial). I absolutely love this piece. I wear this to work every day. It is comfortable, keeps great time, classic, and a truly incredible piece. No issues here. 2) Omega Speedmaster Professional (hesalite)with the big box and goodies. I purchased this piece brand new last year. Objectively speaking, the Speedy is an incredible watch. Timeless design, flawless performance (less than +1 sec/day), and just a cool timepiece. However, I find that it barely gets wrist time. I do love it, but for some reason I just don't get excited to wear it. I've never been a chronograph guy, with the exception of the Speedy. It was the first chronograph I loved enough to buy. I now wear it literally once a week (Tuesdays) and enjoy it for what it is, but as soon as I get home I take it off and put on one of my other 2 watches. It is also the max size I would wear on my 6.75" wrist at 42mm. 3) Tudor Black Bay Blue (ETA). This watch was also acquired brand new. I just loved the style of the rose dial Black Bay from the moment I saw it. I knew I had to have one. I have worn this watch almost every day since I got it in November of last year and it still looks like it just came out of the box. There are very few things I do not like about this piece, but my #1 grip is also one of my favorite things about it, the lack of a date window. I think a date window would absolutely ruin the look of the BB, however the date is (imo) the most useful complication for me. I constantly look down at my watch to remind myself of the date (habit from wearing the Datejust). When I glance down at the BB, I am reminded that there is no date window. I then have to dig my phone out of my pocket to find the date. It gets annoying. I mean, it's not the end of the world, but it does get annoying not having that date window. So this brings me to where I need some advice. Do I consolidate my collection even further and sell off the Speedy and the Black Bay and buy a sub? The term "grail" is thrown around loosely these days so I won't use it. But the black SubC has been my "dream" watch for the longest time. Every time I see one I get all "oooo" and "aaaah". I've lost count how many times I have tried one on in an AD. I guess my concern is, is it all that it's cracked up to be in real life? I thought about just saving up and buying one and keeping what I have, however I truly do not like having a bunch of watches around the house. If I'm not regularly wearing the watch, I don't see the point of keeping it. So what do you guys think, sell the Speedy and Black Bay and buy a gently used SubC? Or do I keep the Speedy and Black Bay? I'd love to hear from some owners of the SubC as well. If I go this route, the SubC would be my daily driver. Datejust for work, SubC for home and play/weekends. I figured I can't go wrong with those two pieces but I value the opinion of the members of this forum and could use some advice. Thanks everyone, Paul |

Do it. Later on, you can always acquire another speedy pro.

What about flipping the BBB and keeping the speedy, then buying a subC.
You still have a toolwatch, a chronograph and a dress watch. Sounds like a good blend. |

Congrats on the Sub. The picture of your child with the Speedy is priceless.

Which ever way you go wait for Basel now. There might be a new tudor or Rolex that really sings to you.

Love Subs so yes do it. Imo the Sub is the perfect all around watch. Been wearing Subs for 30 years and it's still my favorite model. Works for work and play and everything else.
Sounds like it's your dream watch...time to get one.

I went from a Date to a Sub C Date with a many year interval of rubber running watches sandwiched between the two. By all means go Sub C date. I traded my little stainless Date (bad memories) but will add a Datejust down the road, so I would keep that watch. I would trade the Tudor and the Speedy.

paul, your collection as-is has great balance and variety.
but the bb will get shelved soon after a sub arrives anyway, so, yes, dump the speedy and bb for the sub and keep the DJ (lovely btw). id also like to see a THC in blue at some point to round it off. |

To SubC or not to SubC? That is my question.
My advice is such...
Keep the datejust on a black crock - suites every work and dressy occasion. Buy a vintage brown strap for the speedy pro and it can easily become your daily wearer. Sell the Tudor and save a few and get yourself a SubC no date (I personally prefer the date). That way you have 2 iconic sports watches a chronograph casual every day, a SubC for the wet occasions and you won't discriminate between the 2 as they both do not have a date window. The the datejust is just that - a classic formal / work timepiece with a date! Boom! It was a suggestion and I clearly stated I personally prefer the SubC date. Many prefer the no date and the symmetrical dial - not to mention it's the iconic sub for the purist point of view. Sorry if I missed it somewhere, but no where did I get the impression that his hesitation with the speedy was due to the no date? But then again, it's a speedy pro - how could you :). The answer to that question is to always SubC.
I would keep it all and just save though.

From reading your post you strike me as the kind of guy who would prefer the 16610 over the Sub C. Did you ever try one on? In which case I'd move the BB, add a couple k and get the 16610.

Frankly I'd look at getting a 14060 instead of the 114060. You'll save more of the collection that way as well.

All your current watches are awesome! I personally would not sell what you have, however sometimes less is more...
I personally prefer a GMT over a Sub, I would go to an AD and try everything on... Good luck and you cannot go wrong Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I would recommend you sell them both and get the sub c. I don't think if you have any gripes or dissatisfactions with a watch you should keep it. Then you'll have the datejust and the sub c, both of watches you want. The same way you say "I absolutely love the datejust", you should say that about any watch you own. And if you find more watches you "absolutely love" you can add to the collection. Just my 2 cents.

Having owned the SubC in the past and as current owner of BB black, I would not trade my BB for a SubC. I love the Sub for all the reasons that pple love it and you would never go wrong with getting it. However, there is a lot to lose by trading the BB and especially the Speedy. These are awesome pieces to keep!
