World Economy v. Rolex Prices Increase - Who wins?

Let's see, we have a world economy that is tanking around us that could drive the prices down. We have Rolex rumored to increase prices. What do you think will happen? Keep in mind, we all know at some point they will go up, but think this poll is for the near term only.

no decrease I would think. The majority, or a significant number of rolex owners/potential buyers will not be so greatly affected.

I think Rolex will raise their prices and thumb their noses at the economy. Just my opinion.

Like many have said, the customer base of Rolex are mostly in the top of the class when it comes to median income so it would only be to Rolex's advantage to increase prices to continue the aura of prestige. Compared to other luxury brands Rolex appears to be reasonably priced when platinum and diamonds aren't invovled.

Oh yeah speaking of increasing prices :)

I think Rolex will continue to increase prices and the resulting price increase will serve to take Rolex watches out of the hands of less affluent people (attainable to all) thereby restoring the prestigious mystique of the brand.
Of course Rolex doesn't care either way.

I think where this economy is headed we'll all be thinking about things other than Rolex prices in the very near future. Sorry.....

I don't think as many people will continue to buy Rolex. Most middle class people (like me) will not drop $6,000 plus on a watch if the economic future looks bad. Rolex is very unwise not to see this fact. Feed your family or buy a Swiss watch? Is there really any choice here?

Nation wide sales of items you really don't need are down. Furniture sales, down, Car sales way down, vacation/tourism 10 year lows, and SWISS WATCHES 57% decrease in sales compared to this time last year at my ADs. And here is Rolex with their over inflated egos (head in the clouds) with yet another price increase. SHAME ON YOU ROLEX YOU WILL REAP WHAT YOU SOW.

As simple as it seems Rolex (multi-billion dollar company) isn't going to dig its own grave by increasing prices despite the shape of the U.S. economy. Rolex is know as the marketing masters of the business world so this price increase is more strategic than a "gutsy" move. Sure the timing is bad for U.S. sector but there are hundreds of other countries which can easily support revenue for Rolex.

Rolex doesn't want the middle class wearing their watches...they want the middle class to aspire to wearing their watches.

Anyone with a credit card can own a Rolex. IMO, they're not THAT special.

Rolex will continue to up the price no matter what happens to the economy. Hans Wisdorf's philosophy was always to keep the price of a Rolex a little above what the average middle class person could afford - not unreachable for them but so that they would have to strech to buy one. Rolex will still sell all the watches they make and will come to be seen as more exclusive.

Majority of Rolex buyers are probably not significantly affected by the economy and I think that's what Rolex is betting on. With every thing going up in prices, if Rolex wants to keep the same profit margin, they'll need to increase price, something we all feel
Maybe it'll be longer interval between this and next price increase

I had thought several days ago of making a poll "How will the economy affect your Rolex buying habits?"

I have never started a poll and often my forum time is cut short by my business...

I had been thinking that perhaps AD's would have some special sales for good customers, but really don't think the MSRP would drop.

I would assume buying used, gray or private sales, especially under hardship conditions would offer huge opportunities assuming the buyer had sufficient savings and expected the upcoming crisis to be fairly short in duration.

I have certainty that used Rolex values will increase in ten or more years; however some segments are struggling to keep a roof over their head and contend with huge commodity price increases, marginal Rolex owners will sell.

Its pretty simple really, manufacturers are being charged more for raw materials, so they just pass that along to the end user. I think you will see more of a trend to purchase pre-owned as well.
