1995 Rolex Explorer II dead lume?

Hey guys,

Just picked up a 1657 from 1995. The lume on hands and dial is COMPLETELY dead. Is this normal for this model / age?


There's no visible patina, but I'm assuming if it's from this date range it's tritium markings.

Any insight?

Sounds about right. My 1993 GMT2 has NO lume. 1998 luminova Swiss and new Super Luminova (Swiss Made) will. Tritinite .... not so much. With exception of some 66/67 where the phosphorus will get excited and glow for about 8 seconds when it comes in contact with bright light.

Yes dead normal. My '91 X 16570's lume is just beginning to turn yellow. It's visible in person but still photographs white. This pic is a couple weeks old.

If it's the original dial, it would be tritium. Should be marked T < 25

My 14060 from the same time doesn't glow either. Totally normal.

Trit is the way to go. If it's yellow it's mellow. I love Trit dials.
