New Seadweller...record setting interest?

Had a very interesting conversation with an AD in Dallas yesterday while traveling. He said he has been in the business for over 20 years and the new SD announcement has generated more calls and questions than any other Rolex offering he has seen!
He said he already has 15 pre-paid and it far exceeds his wait list for the new Daytona.
We went on to discuss the things that some collectors here don't like such as cyclops and case size.
He sounded pretty in tune with the watch forum chatter and was quick to remind that collectors here represent a very small minority, and that 99%of the general buying public couldn't care less about the history, the cyclops, or the red print...
They want larger watches and the old SD "looked like a sub but for $2,000 more...nobody wanted it".
Interesting conversation....
I really like the new SD (not currently on a list), but it is funny how we caught up in the tiny nuances that the overwhelming majority don't give a thought to.

And this doesn't look anything like a Sub, does it? All be it a slightly oversized one. It looks more like a Sub than the SD4K to me, probably due to the cyclops.

Lugs are slimmer than a maxi case sub.

I think its pretty clear that Rolex's size restraint has opened the doors for IWC, Panerai, Hublot, AP (ROO) and Omega fill that 43mm+ lux watch void. The new SD should be Rolexes best seller in no time. I find it surprising how folks are drawn to larger watches. On a side note, a week ago I was at the AP boutique for 1-2 hours waiting to get my RO looked at. Every person that went in checked out a ROO...

Good point. I asked him what he thought he would receive. He GUESSED maybe 6 in the first year

The cyclops make SD look more like a Sub than ever. In general, people paying a few thousands more would like to see something differentiate it from the Sub.

I'm sure it'll sell well. I've ordered one since I love the red text, new movement, and can pull off a 43mm watch. But it'll sell even better if it look less like a Sub.

It's too expensive for those just 'looking to buy a Sports Rolex'. The Submariner will still be the watch of choice.

Definitely agree. That said, I agree with him that for people who wanted the look of a sub, there werent many compelling reasons to spend extra money on the old sea dweller when it felt like the same watch.
Now people have a choice ...do you want to sub, or do you want the "jumbo sub "
I also think the general buying public likes the cyclops. They associate it with a Rolex, and they want it.
I don't agree with pre-paying. I think that is ridiculous.

I agree. It's a few thousand less with a slimmer case (which translates to more comfortable for many), and it's a 'Sub.' The new SD isn't going to knock the sub out of the top sales position (in the sports category.)

IMO, Not for years. It'll be 10K-11K, maybe more! Need to wait for supply to catch up with demand. Knowing Rolex, they're going to milk it for all it's worth!

Since this new sea dweller is so popular it will likely be in production for the next 30years. Rolex will not discontinue a popular model. So what's the hurry to get it? We will all soon see it on everybody wrist it become too common.

He is an AD from Dallas, and Dallas has a lot of people with money. So I'm not surprise!

Record setting? I seriously doubt it is getting more interest than the blnr did upon release, never mind the 116500.

+ 1

And, I'm sure it was more questions than orders...

Agreed. Typical AD employee BS spiel-(an elaborate or glib speech or story, typically one used by a salesperson.)

I absolutely think it surpasses the interest of the BLNR...I'm shocked that he said it has surpassed the Daytona...but the BLNR doesn't surprise me

If this watch exceeds his waiting list for the Daytona I'm sure I can pick up a Daytona at his place in 1 month?

Ha! You never know...
Not sure why he would make this stuff up though...I was very up front with him that I had zero interest in placing any type of deposit to get this watch.
