Am I being too picky

Here's the story: my 116000 was experiencing a rough feeling when winding. A kind of resistance that was not constant thru the wind, but more intermittent. So I brought it to RSC Toronto to get it checked out under warranty.

When I picked it up, I noticed a metal shaving on the dial. I showed them and they removed it while I waited. That was fine (although a bit unsettling that they would not notice a metal shaving on the dial that i immediately saw upon receiving the watch).

Later on that day, I noticed two small nicks on one of the lugs. I know these weren't there when I dropped the watch off. They are small, but can be felt with a fingernail over the surface of the lug. Attached is a picture of the two nicks (one on each side of the lug).

What would you do in a situation like this?

I'm leaning towards just letting it go, since it's a big hassle for me to go downtown to drop off the watch again, and have to argue with them etc. My watch also has other scratches on it from regular use, but none as deep. In my younger days this would bother me a whole lot more, but now it's only slightly bothering me. But it is still bothering me, probably since this watch is the most expensive that I've ever owned. If you were in my situation, what would you do, if anything?

I know, this is totally a first world problem, but thanks for listening anyways guys!!

Edit: Seeing this thread https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=532238 also makes me feel like it's not such a big deal...

i'd let it go. they'll likely polish the whole thing for free but its still too recent for a full polish imop

Yeah I think your right. Thanks for confirming my initial reaction... Yeah they were going to polish the whole watch as part of the warranty service, but I told them "no polish", which they did adhere to.

I think I would let that go, as much as the marks never should have happened. There's a reasonable chance that an attempt to remedy the issue will make matters worse.

Polish it out with 3m polishing paper assortment. Start with 30 mil then 15 then 9 Will take you about 2 minutes

Leave it. In a couple months it will have all sorts of nicks and scratches. Just enjoy and don't worry about the small stuff.

Lol if you ever wear your watch you'd have the nicks on the lugs within 2 weeks! What the heck! Why would that concern you?! My gold sub is covered in dents and scratches. But I bought it to wear it. Not to sit at home as a living room centerpiece. Rolexes look better when they're broken in and used. Stop being so worried

Nice gold sub! I actually do wear my watch, been wearing it almost daily for close to two years now. Taken it on every vacation, to the beach, swam with it, everything.

And I have not had any nicks that deep in all that time. Hairline scratches everywhere yes, but no nicks as deep as the two put there by the RSC.

On that note, guys, I am going to pay the RSC another visit to show them the lug and see what my options are. I'll post back what they say here.

Going against the masses here. If it were mine I would definitely have them address the nicks. Especially given that an RSC added the marks. No excuses for receiving it back in worse condition. A worn watch can withstand years without collecting nicks other than some fine wear scratches. It all depends on how careful one is. It's also a matter of preference how "scratched up" you like your watch.

I totally, totally share this exact same of view; not just with watches, either!

Sure, you could deal with the stress and hassle of taking it back, but is it worth your time knowing that more scratches are inevitable as part of owning and wearing a watch?

Whether it be scratches, accuracy - whatever, I keep these issues in perspective especially now that I am older and have more worthy, and significant matters to devote my attention to.

And you know what, I enjoy my watches that much more having learned to not sweat the small stuff!

Thanks guys for all the advice.. I'll be letting it go... Not worth the hassle. Even tho they shouldn't have added the nicks, and they are deeper than any of the scratches that I've added myself.

I've been quite careful with the watch, but maybe now in a way those nicks have 'freed' me to use the watch in a more carefree way...

Have to agree good health is far more important than a few very minor marks on any watch.How this forum have changed since it started way back in 2005,with alignment points, fretting over the slightest mark.Can I wear this or that in whatever country,what's the best resting cloth to put my Rolex on.My watch is showing +3 seconds a day should I send my watch for service.Lately the list is endless sometimes I wonder why some buy Rolex watches perhaps to just wear the brand.Because some it seems to me a Rolex watch causes them too much heartache to enjoy wearing there watch..

I agree with your sentiment, I think it has a lot to do with how expensive these watches have become; so some want to baby them. Their prices have jumped significantly in just a litte over a decade.

HA - we're a lot a like - I was once OCD about cars as well! I still try to exercise a reasonable amount of care, but have since come to accept that no matter how much care is exercised, there will always be factors outside our scope of control!

The scratches are minimal. I think the bigger problem is rsc's are simply careless. We wouldn't have these discussions if a little more care was exercised.

They do seem pretty carless... On this visit there was 2 issues, the metal shaving on the dial, and the 2 nicks.. That's a lot of issues for one visit. On top of it all, after winding the watch, it still seems to have the same intermittent roughness to it. It may be the clutch slipping because it's fully wound... I'll have to see how it feels when totally unwound.


Next time watch needs service, if it's not under warranty I'm going to think twice before bringing it into this particular RSC. I've always heard great things about the Toronto RSC. Maybe they had an off day...
