Am I crazy to even think about flipping a DaytonaC for a SS Sky Dweller?

Even though they aren't out yet, I've been agonizing over whether to flip my newly acquired 116500LN (black dial) for a SS (or two-tone, as you wish) Sky Dweller once they hit stores in a few months. I love my Daytona, but I've also really liked the Sky Dweller for a while now, and the new SS price tag is within my reach, unlike the PM models. I live overseas but am in constant contact with the US, so it would be quite useful to have a GMT function. And I have to admit the lack of a date on the Daytona drives me absolutely nuts. I had a Sub date for 10+ years and I'm just so used to looking at my wrist, I can't break that habit.

So...even though there's nothing I can do about it now (other than wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat thinking about should I? shouldn't I?), would you guys trade a black DaytonaC straight-up for a SS Sky Dweller? Even if I had to add a bit to make up the difference, I'm assuming with the pent-up demand for the Daytona it would just about even out. I don't have much else in the arsenal, so this would be a daily wearer (I just can't say "beater" for a $14k watch).

I realize I should just keep the Daytona and buy the Sky Dweller, but that might not go down so well with my better half...so in the interests of household bliss, I think I should just keep one or the other.

I would welcome your thoughts!

I would do it in a second. I have never been a Daytona fan and the Sky Dweller is amazing.

In addition, I think the Daytona wears too small...

I felt the same way about Daytona, which made it a perfect fit for my wife's smaller wrist.

But this past weekend while getting a hair cut at a local hair salon, I saw a young Asian man with a smaller build wearing a black Daytona C and it looked amazing on him, and did not look small for his wrist / size at all. (Actually looked a little too big... I had to double check to confirm it was indeed a Daytona.)

I think how a watch wears highly depends on the person who is wearing it.

I value history and as a result the decision is an easy one. But then again, if you want the new watch smell that badly, follow your heart.

Also keep in mind that the SkyD is about 3mm larger in diameter than the Daytona. Be sure to try it on first.

Never crazy as it's what "sings" to you that cliché'd prhase. But having said that, wow, that's a ballsy trade. Worse thing would be if you have regret, I think going the other way means losing money. I would sit tight and think about it a bit more. I doubt the Daytona prices would be coming down anytime soon and the sky dweller waiting list cannot be that long (complete guess)

It makes sense considering what you could get for a DaytonaC when flipping it.

Kind of what I'm thinking too. I actually thought about selling it immediately after purchase to cash in on the $3-4k difference b/w grey market and MSRP, but then I fell in love with the watch!

Not a fan of the Cheap-Dweller...nor its predecessor!

The White Dial Daytona C is starting to grow on me. Just a little.

Yes, but I really love the design of the Daytona and it's so comfortable on the wrist. Choices, choices...

What's your car history? I mean a 2-3 yr. lease?
I've found a correlation with Watch ownership life cycles

For me, the SkyDiddy is not useful vs. a GMT - I get that the SD requires less manual setting during the year.
But reading that subdial for a 2nd TZ everyday isn't worth avoiding a date reset 5 times each year.

So, a big no from me.

Funny enough, I've actually owned the same car for about 8 years now! But we live in a place where nice cars go to die, so no sense buying something new here, plus two young children whose mission seems to be to destroy the car at every turn. But they know not to touch daddy's watch!

i would do it, youll make money on the transaction as well in terms of selling the daytonac over what you paid if it was retail.

life is too short to have 15k tied up in a watch you no longer want.

that said i wouldnt do a trade for a couple reasons. first youll make more selling the daytonac privately. second i dont think you should pay full retail for the SS SkyD because it wont hold that retail value for long. the blue may but the black and white just wont.

Thanks, good advice. I'm all about convenience, but if it means an additional thousand or two, I may just try to sell it myself. Also depends on what the Trusted Sellers are asking vs. ADs, and whether there's a long wait list.

I would do it given the price difference between used and new.

When prices settle down buy it back.

With all of the craziness surrounding the DaytonaC I'm surprised more people haven't gone to flip for a more expensive purchase.

Although, there is a lot of hype on the SS skydweller and I'd be interesting to see how it's finally received when available.

I did - traded in my white 116520 Daytona and am waiting on my blue sky dweller ;)

I see versions Daytona everywhere and almost never see a SkyD, I'm sure they will become more prevalent, but I'll still feel like I have something different.

You're the first person I've seen on here to make this trade. Very interested to hear what you think once the Sky Dweller arrives, and of course to see some pics...
