Sent Rolex to RSC for service, got a worrying response
Hello all, So i had this incident when I sent my rolex to the offical rsc for service since I have had it for 10 years and never serviced it. I am a lurker here but this incident made me sign up and post.
Originally I bought my rolex at a national AD brand new 10 years ago. I recently went to the same AD (but different city from original purchase since I have moved) to add a link since I have gained a few pounds in the past 10 years and the watch was getting a little tight. I gave them the extra link that was removed from my watch when it was first sized when I bought it 10 years ago. They told me their watchmaker is only there 2 days out of the week, so I left it with them and came back a week later after the link was added. Tried on the watch, it fit perfectly and then decided, that I should just send the rolex in for service since its never been serviced in 10 years. Fast forward 4 weeks later I get a call for the repair prices from my AD and one of them is $60 to change a link that is not an official rolex link on the watch. Now I have never given this watch to anyone except for this one time to add a link. I explained this to the AD who is the same gentlemen that I spoke with when I brought it to add the link, he responded that he would not know how that would happen but said he will do me a favor and will cover the cost of the new link. I have a feeling they didn't add the link I gave them, gave me a non official rolex link that looks similar and now got caught and are trying to cover themselves by just paying for it. What do you guys think? I don't care about the $60 dollars, what I worry about more is now I feel like I can not trust that AD anymore. Thoughts?? |

There needs to be a set of personal rules that we all follow to avoid many detrimental issues.
The above is an example of one...

Doesn't sound good and why do they have fake links lying around if so?

Weird story but I wouldn't give it much thought since they will cover the cost of the new link. A lot worse has happened at ADs if you spend enough time on this site.

Why not send it directly to RSC yourself? The AD sounds deceitful and that'd be enough for me to pick it up my watch.
Perhaps, they're selling non-Rolex links/parts to unsuspecting customers. Who's the AD?

So, if you ever give your Rolex back to a Rolex Authorized Dealer to do anything, not only do you have to worry about scratches, nicks, dings, tool marks, and the like, but you have to mark all of your removable links with a small scratch so you can verify that you get them back and aren't being given counterfeit links??? Disgusting behavior. Utterly disgusting.
I would ask to speak to the manager or owner and have a very serious, private conversation about what went on. They may not know it and might thank you for telling them. If they do know what went on, you are putting them on notice that you and tons of Rolex afficianados know about their ploy. Name and shame! Oh, and call the RSC, explain the situation, and see if they will make an exception and start dealing directly with you instead of the AD. |

I'd be worrying what else they did with my watch.
As long as they're covering the cost of the link, I wouldn't worry too much.

They are really a reputable jeweler, spanning possibly 15+ years in the business, even more, never heard a negative word, but then again, things change of course. Speak to the manager, and try to bring RSC into the loop. Its better to have all bases covered thats what I would do

Did the same AD that you purchased the watch from, also sell you and install the extra link?

Only other option is the original Mayors replaced the link with a fake one and I never noticed. |

Without seeing the actual service estimate from RSC we're just guessing.
It's just as likely that somebody saw the new link that looked different from the rest and made an assumption.

Talk to the owner(s) of both locations. Be serious and concerned, yet polite. Tell us what he/she says.

That's a bummer. Hopefully, if it's true, that it's just one shady person and can be dealt with.

This situation does sound suspicious and, for the benefit of the broader Rolex/WIS community, I would personally advocate pursuing the matter with the AD's manager and the RSC; if they are engaged in such shady practices, they should be ejected from the AD network for all of their brands (IMHO) and prevented from causing loss to other customers. Of course, if they can pinpoint a single or few bad actors in their group then perhaps the action should be less severe, but ultimately it is the management's responsibility to have oversight of such things, even if it can be hard to do so. With that said, plenty of ADs do a good job, so I cannot see Rolex being interested in keeping one whose actions harm the brand.

I don't get this.
Why would you risk something like this happening every time you go through an AD and on top of that pay more for the exact same service compared to sending it yourself to RSC? |

I would learn to change my own link. I don't like to leave my jewelry, watch, car and whatever else out of my site unless I have too.
