Icon5 Moving to LA

Hi TRF,

It is time for me to start working things out for my second watchmaking internship and I can go to Vanessa at Jewelers on Time in Newport Beach CA.

I know rent is expensive in the LA area but I can work this out with the company and possibly a scholarship from school. But the difficult thing is finding a suitable studio or room with small kitchen, bed/living room and bathroom, (preferably between $1400 and $1900).
How do I not get scammed by some guy on apartments.com or craigslist?

I would appreciate your input.

Book an Airbnb for your first few days there. Then, find an apartment/room you can sublet for the duration of your internship -- check out the space in person before paying

Hi Bas,

Good for you. There are realitors that help you find a place that specialize on leases. Not sure how long your going to there though. And even then, there's a very large student population up near Cal-State, Long Beach and possible school even closer. Student union has a board where you can check for rental take overs or just someone looking for room mate.

Best of luck hope to see you in Las Vegas if you head up this way for a few days

Congrats Bas and welcome to SoCal. Depending on how close you want to be to JOT, it can be pretty pricey. Will you have a car? Irvine is a nice area and has UC Irvine close so there will be apartments but they will be close to you max number. As you go further inland you can get cheaper places to rent.

You can try apartmentguide.com for some places. Cities I would look at if I wanted to be "around" JOT would be Irvine, Costa Mesa, Tustin, Huntington Beach. You can use CL, but just need to be careful of scammers.

Congrats, Bas, and welcome to SoCal! Keep in mind that Newport Beach is not too close to LA, so you may want to consider areas closer to JOT, a few areas mentioned above. Otherwise, you'll be in the car, stuck in traffic on the 405, often. I currently do this commute, and I would not wish it on anyone.

I'm looking at the Costa Mesa area, commute would be by bicycle.
Studio/apartments in my budget are bad to say the least. A shared place with private bedroom is probably what I need.
This is harder than I thought it would be.

The 405/San Diego Freeway is best avoided 24/7. Traffic can be bumper to bumper even on a weekend around 1AM. n:

For a 6-8 month internship, it might be best to explore a shared housing environment that is within close proximity to JOT. As you will be coming and going on your own, all you really need at this point in time is a quiet/safe place to sleep/shower and perhaps prepare a meal. If you opt for this particular route, the primary consideration is to have a positive vibe/sense for the living environment as the +/- dynamics of shared housing interactions can vary.

That said, welcome to CA. Outside of the gridlock (that exists in some of the more heavily-populated areas), you'll enjoy it out here and there will be plenty of interesting places to explore/check-out during your off-hours/downtime.

Hey BC

In my previous message I stated that I found a suitable & affordable place.
Thank you for your input

Hey Bas, you can look at apartments.com, but I also think that booking something through Airbnb is a good idea.

Let me know if you need any help with anything and I'd be happy to help.

Welcome!

Just saw that there are monthly payments on Airbnb.
Can one stay for this long in an Airbnb though? (7-8 months)

You need a formal lease. Airbnb is fine for 1-30 days. After that, you want a signed document that protects you and the landlord.

As others have recommended a realtor, I would take it one step further and say find one that specializes in rentals. Not sure how the socal market is but you also want to find an apartment that is no fee for you.

I think I found a good place through Airbnb, a small private bedroom with queen size bed. Shared bathroom and kitchen.
He had quite a few good reviews.

He pre-approved my stay so I can work all other things out.

I'm pretty happy

I live and work in Costa Mesa a few streets from JOT. If you want your own studio, you will have to stay on the west side of Newport Blvd. for that price range. Or, find a home with a guest room/suite. There are so many houses around here that have a rental unit.
