Awful news. A picture I saw this morning looked like it came down flat with no forward movement.

Prayers and condolences to the families and friends.

From another article...

Quote:
Jones said a man borrowed his cellphone to report to authorities that there were bodies across U.S. Highway 82, more than a mile from the crash site.
Quote:
Jones said the plane hit the ground behind trees in the soybean field, and by the time he and other reached the crash site, fires were burning too intensely to approach the wreckage. The force of the crash nearly flattened the plane, Jones said.

"Beans are about waist-high, and there wasn't much sticking out above the beans," he said.

I just read this on Fox news...A KC-130, used as a refueling tanker, "experienced a mishap" when it corkscrewed into a soybean field about 4 p.m. Monday at a location around 85 miles north of Jackson, the Marine Corps said. The aircraft's debris scattered in a radius of nearly 5 miles.

I correct my earlier post. Aircraft debris scattered in a 5 mile radius would indicate some kind of inflight breakup.

Just awful.

One report I heard claimed that the aircraft suffered an explosive while in flight, before it hit the ground. At this point there's no telling what happened, and obviously a thorough investigation will have to be done, but has been a lot of concern in recent years about the state of USMC aviation assets. Years of deployments and hard use have pushed their aircraft to the limits. Marine and DoD officials have all spoken of the difficulty they've had maintaining their aging fleet of aircraft while having to keep up with operational requirements.

Such a terrible tragedy.

Semper Fi, Marines. Be Thou At Peace.

So sad. These are pretty reliable aircraft and have a rather low mishap rate, yet still a tragedy.
