not for the dinner table talk

My fellow TRFers....I pose this to you as it's not like I can just sit down at the dinner table and ask this question. I would only be met with dirty looks and rolled eyes followed up with, "more watch talk? ugh."

I am thinking of selling my 16710. Since picking up my D-blue last November, the pepsi has seen little wrist time compared to the D-blue, bluesy, and gmt2c. The explorer has seen some time, but not a lot either.

Things with the 16710 that I'm not happy with (get your sticks and stones ready to throw):

The bracelet. The bracelet cannot compare to the six digit bracelets, not at all. Also, the font is dated and not super appealing to me. A WG pepsi is not in the budget and won't be for a very long time unless I flip everything for one. As I was saying, I'm not in love with the font. It just looks too dated for me.

Things I like:

The 16710 is very uncommon. I've only seen one other in the wild, and it was an LN. The guy wearing it had no clue the bezels could be swapped out.

I love the red and blue colors.

It's nice being able to swap out the bezels, but sadly, I rarely do.

WIS types find it pretty cool...

In the end, I think I like the features of the modern day references better. Having 5 Rolex in the collection seems a bit excessive, especially since I really only wear 3 regularly in the rotation. The chase and collecting has been fun, but I think I may be over it. I'm really thinking of shrinking down to just three. I tried wearing it today, but after a while I put the D-blue back on.

I feel I'd be better off with the money sitting in the bank, or pumping the proceeds into my kid's 529 account (or for the day Rolex releases the pepsi in SS lol)....There's not much else on the market right now that interests me, so flipping wouldn't interest me.

So, like I said, not dinner time talk....What are your thoughts?

I have so many watches that I can't reasonably give them all equal wrist time.

I try to rotate through the expensive ones and then once in awhile put those all away and rotate through the lesser brands.

I personally don't see a problem with having watches that I don't care to wear all that often. I get pleasure from just having them around and just wearing them as the notion strikes.

They don't have feelings, so it's not like they get mad at me for ignoring them and when I'm ready to wear them they're ready to go, except of course for the quartz models that sometimes need a new battery to rise to the occasion.

So, I say, stop worrying about the 16710 and let it set until you feel the urge to wear it. Give it a wind once in awhile and everything should be good.

Now, if you're wanting another watch, that might mean flipping the Pepsi, but for myself, I don't believe in flipping and I would, if it were me, just enjoy the D-Blue until I was ready for a change.

Gotta agree with Grady on this one.

Having a nice watch is a luxury. Having a collection of nice watches is a privilege.

My Rolex collection is now quite diverse. When I tire of one model I retire it to the safe and grab another one. I may wear one continuously for a few days or even a few months but eventually I inevitably fancy a change.

If I ever get to the point I really dislike a piece I once cherished, then maybe I'd consider letting it go, but I'm a collector before I'm a flipper.

The one thing I've learnt about watch collections, is that it can take months to come back round to wanting to wear a watch again thats been retired in the safe, in some cases even a couple of years. Hell, my '96 speedy pro has been in storage for over 15 years until last week and now I can't take it off but I'm glad I kept it.

Yes, you're right, the bracelet of the 16710 feels cheap and nasty compared to a modern solid link offering, but thats part of the charm of these older references that makes them so popular amongst collectors going forward.

If I were you, I'd keep it. It's not like its depreciating right now either. I fully expect you're love for it will return given enough time, and this has been demonstrated time and time again here on the forum with all manor of 'flippers remorse' threads.

I'm of the opposite mind of our man Grady on this one. I think if you don't wear it, send it off to a new home where it will get some love. Watches were made to be on a wrist.

And my watches definitely have feelings.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. Since picking up my Explorer II, the Submariner gets little to no wrist time. I'm going to give it a few weeks and decide if I want to keep it.

You can always sell your 16710 to me... ;)

In my mind the WG Pepsi is accessible if you trade in both your GMT Masters. Considering, you just picked up your D-Blue, make that your durable SS in the daily rotation.

Trade the 116710LN and 16710 (that you don't wear) in on an excellent condition BLRO. Should get you really close.

Is your 16710 the 3185 or 3186? I guess that could make a difference too.

Great collection you already have btw

I agree with Dave 100%. I don't keep watches around that aren't getting wrist time.

I sold my 16710 due to the fact it wasn't getting any wrist time once I picked up my 114060. It wasn't a gift and had no real sentimental value other than the fact it was my first Rolex. If you are not wearing it let It go.

As much as Dave talks (sorry, writes) a lot of sense, I'm with Grady on this one. If you don't need the money, put the Pepsi away until you feel like wearing it. Who cares if it's next week, next month, next year or in ten years time? It's not going to rot and it's not going to cost you anything sat in the drawer

x2

Tastes change. If you don't have a need for the money or a specific project for which the money can be used, I would just keep the watch. You might come to love it again, or you sell it when you need to... your watch is I only going up in value, anyway.

It's clear you don't like it any more, so time to part of it. Personally, i would keep it instead of the D Blue

If it were me, and there was no compelling reason to sell right now, I would keep it. As my tastes evolve, they seem to come full circle. The Pepsi is a classic, and you bought it for a reason. Who knows...in ten years maybe you'll be glad you kept this reference.

....or maybe you won't.

Not quite certain why you'd say the 16710 is uncommon. It was in production for 20 years. Much less common is the 16700.

I say this because I see 10-20 sub variants a week (Not that it's a bad thing). I've only seen 3 other GMT Masters in the wild over the last several years. One, 16710 as mentioned in original post, one newer ceramic, and one beast of a YG with green dial. So although they were/are massed produced and technically not uncommon, they are not commonly seen outside of TRF (in my experiences) compared to a number of other references.

I understand the need to keep watches around and wearing them when you feel like it, but like the OP, my preference is for the newer range rather than the older - and this preference has far outweighed my desire to hang on to the older models.

It's not a matter of how often you wear the watch...it comes down to if you still appreciate it and enjoy the piece....it's already a chore for most of us rotating watches and some have large collections....so some sitting idle is inevitable. IMO if you're asking/contemplating on selling it, it's already a tell that it needs to go....the lack of wrist time is just a consequence...my two cents.

I get your point and agree with you, much prefer the feel of the 6 digit vs 5 digit myself

If this watch has no sentimental value, and you don't think you will wear it then sell it and use the money wisely.
If one day you will feel again like you want other 16710 Pepsi, you can always buy one, there are plenty of them in the market.
Of course, you'll probably buy it at a higher price ....

I am of the thought that if I do not wear a watch and I do not have a special feeling about it I will move on and try to find a watch that I do wear. If you are not ready to move it just give it some time.

I too had a 16710 Pepsi and the bracelet was way too light and non existent, for my taste.. sold mine after 5 months.. sounds like you already made up you mind to sell, but the great part is it will sell in a heartbeat

I found that after buying an Omega Seamaster 300, I was hardly wearing my TT Daytona, eventually I traded them both back to Watchfinder for an SS Sub, and banked what came back, at the same time I'm really loving the new acquisition!

I feel you on this, I'm a 6 and 4 digit man, modern and true vintage, the 5s don't do it for me. I think sell the Pepsi now and wait for Basel, there's usually something there to bother the wallet's cobwebs.

As others have said, if the money isn't immediately needed (which it doesn't look like it is), there's no harm in keeping it, as the value will only continue to go up. Optionally, flipping a few for something else is also a choice.

I hate seeing anything I own just sit! If I am not riding my motorcycle, I sell it and buy another one later down the road if I want to start riding again. The boat is for sale right now because I just haven't used it enough this summer. Watches are the same. If it sits, it will be sold. I just put the funds aside and use them for another boat, motorcycle, watch, etc when I get the itch. I say sell the watch and sit on the money. Use it for something else later down the road.

The only caveat with a watch is if it is a special purpose watch - for example you might want/need a dress watch, but it is only worn a few times per year. I would not sell this watch as it fills a special role within a collection.
