Inherited Watch
I'm new to here and I wanted to ask a question.
I inherited a very nice and expensive Rolex when my father passed. One that I could NEVER afford. Is there anyone in my situation? I feel a little weird about wearing it, did any of you that received a Rolex as a gift or inherited it feel this way? |

How about a photo posted to accompany the story? It'll be easier to respond to as there are so many Rolex models.

My dad passed in February of 16 at 60, I wear his Daytona and Sub on a regular basis. The Dayonta is my profile pic. Sorry about the loss of your father, I know how it can be. Wear in good health and as a memory.

My dad passed one on to me. Thought it would cost too much to have it serviced. Since then i purchased two more. LOL

Thank you for your kind words.
My father owned his own bisuness and made pretty good money. When he passed I got his 18k gold Rolex DayDate. One of the only things I have of his. I do not make close to what he made nor the lifestyle we had growing up. I work at a scrap metal place (hence the handle). It make me feel like a "poser", or trying to be something i'm not when I wear it. It would take me years to save up for something like this. My sister sold the one of my mothers, but I don't really want to sell it as i said it is one of the only things I have of his. So I just feel weird when I have it on. I dunno I might be crazy, but I just thought I'd ask this place. Maybe help sort out the conflict I have in my head. |

I would never have an issue wearing a watch my father passed on to me. My dad was an awesome man.

If you cannot afford to replace it, please insure it. Should not cost more than 1-1.5% a year. JMO.I have a Hamilton watch that I inherited from my father. It remain in a SDB except for special occasions.

I agree. But do get it insured first.

Wear it with pride.
I'm sure your father would be proud of you to do so. Don't worry about stereotypes if its a Rolex Day-Date it is ageless.

Sorry about your father's passing. You should wear the watch to remember him. It should put a smile on your face.

As others have said, I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
I think your post raises really complex and important issues. While I have not inherited a gold Rolex, I think I can understand some of the feelings you're talking about. I inherited my grandfather's old leather flight jacket from when he was a pilot in the Pacific in WWII. When I first received it, I wanted to wear it: I liked it, and I guess I wanted to keep that remnant of my grandfather alive. But the jacket has his name on it, and it is covered with the patches from his squadron and test-piloting days. For reasons I still can't quite put my finger on, I don't feel right wearing it. Like the OP, I feel like I would come across as a poser. (And it matters, I suppose, that my professional life is very different from that of a career military man.) In any case, I just wanted to acknowledge the complexity of the OP's thoughts and feelings on this. The motto of "wear what you want" doesn't always help. |

I fully understand your reluctance to wear the watch. On the other hand, this sounds like an important heirloom, something to remember your father by. As mentioned before, get it insured asap, this shouldn't cost too much. After that's in place, perhaps keeping the watch stored and wearing it in special occasions could be a good middle ground for your concerns.
I'm sorry for your loss. Best of luck. |

Wear it. I can count on one hand then number of times in 20 years that anyone has asked about my watch. There are some that are watch people that notice and ask what I am wearing but the general public, no clue.

You can always tone it down by putting it on a plain strap.
Just get it insured, or put it somewhere safe until you're ready for it. |

It was your dads and you should not combine any financial thoughts with it. Consider it a timepiece not a status symbol. Enjoy it!

For people who couldn't understand where I was coming from, I guess I have some insecurities about not being as well off as we were growing up. That being said it is a BEAUTIFUL watch and I do love it! |

My father passed away last year, he gave me his 18k Date just for my MFA graduation, everytime I hold it I kiss it, silly I know but as the OP said, it's the only thing that's left!
I wear it sometimes during the weekend, I know one day it will be my daily watch, in 2 years it will be 50 years old... Keep it to the next generation, cherish it every day.... |

JM, a DD is a pretty special watch and I wouldn't wear it to work on the car or build garden beds - but that's just me.
To me, it's a 'dress-up' kind of watch, so maybe you wouldn't wear it to work, but just put it on as soon as you get off work. Inherited valuable items are something that not everyone has and these things become more significant as you get older, particularly if you have someone to pass then to. Look after it and enjoy it. You are very lucky.

Of course you should wear it! I'm curious as to why you would feel strange? I have inherited watches from my grandfather and from my father and in tern they will go to my children. This is an age old tradition.
