New member help picking out my first long term rolex!

Hello everyone!

I will be purchasing my first rolex this week and after hours and hours of research I narrowed it down to 2 choices. Both choices are the same price point and in similar condition. One is a blue dial 1603 and the other is a slate gray tapestry 16220. Both of them look great but I can't decide on one or the other and could use some opinions to help me make the right choice! I also am not really sure about the difference between the 1603 and the 16220 and had a hard time finding it online (please forgive my ignorance for I am still new). I have put some pictures below of the 2 choices. This will be a watch that I keep for a long time so I want to make sure I pick wisely!

I also wanted to add both pieces are authentic and from reputable sources- the one difference is that the slate gray piece comes with box and papers as well while the blue 1603 only comes with the watch.

Thank you all for your input!

Both are beautiful. Box and papers always an added plus, especially in the future if you want to upgrade. I have a similar Rolex 36mm with a Silver Tapestry dial, except mine has the fluted WG Bezel not the engine turned Bezel. I think the Gray is dressier but what do I know, just my opinion. I suggest you go with the one that you like best. Looking forward to your viewing your choice. Good luck!

Blue dial, it will be unique and it is beautiful. This is actually the first time I seen the one your getting. The silver dial makes no sense to me, it is not that beautiful to me.

Thank you for these opinions, I wish I could see the tapestry and blue in person but pictures is my only reference for now. Upon closer inspection.. the tapestry dial that I am looking at seems a bit worn.. what do you guys think?

The silver/gray dial blends with the hour markers and hands which makes it hard to read. The 1603 blue dial is a desired classic, and a very versatile watch. Sporty yet dressy, t-shirt/jeans or suit.

BLUE

I'd go with the Slate 16220. Between box and papers, color, and the unique look of the tapestry dial, I think it's a nicer package overall.

Agreed...however, it all depends on what you're after. I agree with the comments that put the blue a little sportier and grey a little dressier. So go with what suits YOU best.

seems like a split opinion, does the finish on the pictures of the slate dial show wear in the picture or is that just the flash?

Oh wow, I thought beckertime was pretty reputable, is there a reason? A bad experience perhaps?

Out of those the 16220. It probably has the most life left in the jubilee. Good luck

thanks for the help everyone! I decided to get the blue dial as seen in the first few pictures! It is a 16220 and in near perfect condition from what is stated. Looking forward to my first rolex! I plan on getting it serviced at RSC within a few weeks of receiving it!

I would suggest you get it service at Official Time Watch, half the cost of an RSC. Superb 100% service that will leave you breathless after you get your watch back in Showroom new condition.

The grey is too hard to see.

The 1603 is okay, but I would save a little more money and get a blue DJ41. You can pick up the oyster and smooth bezel for a bit over $6k.

I agree re the DJ41 , especially since you're new and want to keep it a long time.
It will have the new movement and 5 yrs warranty. The other two are a lot older.
DJ 41 has killer blue dial and rhodium dial options too.
