All I can do is sit down and cry with pride
Dear virtual family:
You all remember last year's mix of emotions after my father in law's passing... https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=481141 https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=481202 |

All I can do is sit down and cry with pride
A few moments ago, as I was returning from a quick road trip, my daughter and wife show up after visiting my mother in law.
As they sat to talk and share coffee, she gives my daughter a red box. In it, her 1970's Date. She tells my daughter that she would be very happy if she wore that watch, as she deserved it. Dear TRF: it is not the monetary value, but the impressive sentimental value of such a present. All I can do is sit down and cry. With pride. My daughter and son have inherited their grandparent's watches. They were chosen for a reason (I will never ask, yet I am so grateful) and both will wear during special moments a timepiece that has a unique story. I am VERY proud of them. ...Family is ALWAYS first. |

....my kids’ 45+ year old watches. Wow. The stories behind them....they are not just watches, but timepieces worn by their grandparents.
This, my friends, is the REAL value behind our hobby. |

Agreed. It's not the value of the watch but the immeasurable value of the memories it brings.

A watch is worn on your very person close to the skin, through good times & bad, day & night, it has tracked the momentous points of a life. Yes, it's just an object, but if we are to imbue any object with some meaning greater than itself, then I tend to think a watch is as good a pick as any. Clothes are binned. Cars are scrapped. Houses are sold. I can't think of anything more personal. That's why I purposely bought my Submariner (first & only Rolex) to wear when I held my daughter in the delivery room (using the timing bezel to measure contractions & medication intervals!). Lovely story, G. Those little machines have meaning. |
