Rolex vs Invicta.........Apples and oranges?

I understand there's virtually no comparison between the two watches in both quality and heritage. But I wonder, Invicta watches I'd say on average would be around $100-$500 price range. Obviously Rolex watches are much more expensive, but I wonder who makes more money at the end of the year? Invicta has shops all over the world including a huge store in the heart of Times Square. Invicta has the license for Disney and Marvel comics, dominates the shop at home network and just about every jewelery store in the country carries them. So I wonder, at the end of the day.....financially speaking, who is more successful? (Please, I know there will be some forum members anoyed buy this topic, but it's just something light hearted to discuss)

who is more successful is subjective... I'd rather run Rolex and get paid less, than run Invicta and get paid more.

I know you said financially, but that's how I see it

There's a place in the world for Rolex and a place in the world for Invicta.

Curious. Is the overall contempt/ridicule towards the Invicta brand based on some sort of Rolex owner 'snob appeal' (or perhaps the case of random mistaken identity from a distance?). Granted Invictas are known to have lousy customer service, a 'copycat' Rolex design + the engraved 'Invicta' (on the rear of their SS sports models) is incredibly tacky. On the other hand, the Invicta is an affordable watch for many and all things considered, serves its purpose.

What puts me off is the blatant copying of Rolex designs. I wouldn't wear a fake Rolex and I also wouldn't wear an Invicta. The fact that it says Invicta on it and not Rolex doesn't make it any better in my opinion.

Your absolutely correct, and the original post was not intended to put down the company, in fact I give it much credit for creating what it has! For many people spending $500 on a watch is huge, and I get that. To tell you the truth, I'm more comfortable wearing my MTM patriot or a g shock than my Rolex. I have owned plenty of invictas and have met the owner and spoke to him for a while about watches, he's a great passionate guy, loves what he does. Here he is checking out my tattoo for a new watch design, lol.

One advantage with Invicta is there's no shortage of sports watches. Went to one of my ADs today and all they had were DJ and OPs other that one Milgauss and an AK, Oh, they had the all gold Sub with blue dial and bezel. I commented that they had no sports watches and was told, "they're pretty popular." Lame. I'd hate to be a Jeweler depending on the Rolex brand to make a living. There was plenty of empty space in the Omega area as well. I suspect Rolex isn't the only one with supply problems.

Please excuse me but they are just distasteful.

I believe that's what you get when you mix apples and oranges...

Howdy,

To me, setting aside my personal bias as to the tackiness of many of their models and to their rediculous sizes, what I find most offensive is their marketing scheme.

Essentially, I feel like they are the predatory lender of the watch world. They falsely promote models on TV as being worth 10-15 times the sale price, they act as if they are great collectibles that will hold their value, and pretend that their quality is of the highest order. All of which is totally false.

If you go into it knowing that, and just want a cool looking watch with a gigantic display case, then more power to you and buy what makes you happy. But, if your starting a collection, don’t know any better, and believe the hype, you could quickly and unknowingly waste a lot of hard earned money on junk.

I often wonder how many entry level WIS enthusiasts live in rural America, have never been in a store that even carries Rolex and, because they don’t even know what their real options are, pour a small fortune into these watches for all the deceptive promotional reasons listed above.

I know they said on one of their shows that 50% of their customers own at least 10 or more of their watches. Depending upon the Invicta models that could easily be close in cost to a mint condition second hand Oyster Perpetual. The guy with 20 Invivtas may be able to afford a new OP.

If the collector goes into it with full disclosure and still loves Invicta, then good for him. If he’s happy, I’m happy. But, for every one of those guys I worry there are a lot of other people who will someday want to sell their Invictas to get that TAG, only to discover their watches won’t get 10 cents on the dollar when they hit eBay. That’s a damn shame because those people worked hard for that money and they got taken.

Take care,

Ruddiger

I can't speak to the business model, but I can speak to the quality of the brand. I currently own 10 Rolex watches,7 wrist and 3 pocket including an original 1908 Wilsdorf & Davis, and Nancy has 4 Rolex.

I also have an Invicta 9937 that has been chugging along for 10 years or so now. It does everything I need a watch to do and is a great stunt double if I'm doing something dodgy such as rebuilding a snowblower or scraping the popcorn finish off my living room ceiling.

I wanted a meteorite dial watch and any Rolex model with a meteorite dial was out of my league. I bought an automatic Invicta Ocean Ghost. Probably not worth what I paid for it but, yes, Invicta has a place and purpose in the industry.

Rolex without question. Invicta about $50 million per year, Rolex about $5 billion per year. Or Rolex sales is equal to 100 Invictas,

"Rolex produces more than 2,000 watches each day. It has a total sales figure of $4.5 billion, and its brand is valued at around $6.5 billion."

Says who? I wasn't aware Rolex released figures like these. No source cited by the author. Are we to take this as fact just because Sammy Said (see what I did there!)? Apparently, people on this forum are happy to do so.

What do you mean "who makes more money"?

Profits?
Revenue?

More successful, sells more watches, makes more money at the end of the year, higher profit?

I would buy one of those Invicta cases.

If only it didn't say Invicta...

Probably more likely to get stolen because of that text.

The reason Invicta has any success is because it’s
virtually mimicking Rolex models and designs...!!!
Without Rolex to copy from and other high end brands
Invicta would be scheis , zero...

I’ve now been burned on a number of occasions complementing
someone on their nice watch thinking it was a Rolex only
to find out it was a Invicta... disappointing to say the least.

So true. Invicta makes cheap watches that they pretend are worth more than they are and that sell for a fifth of their "msrp." I have a collection of now unused Invictas. The only ones working are several mechanicals. Those are being saved for the Zombiepocolypse. The only good news is that they sparked my interest in real watch brands.

This is the real value of these watches. I’m 33, and when I was a kid I desperately wanted a calculator watch. Then in middle school I saved up for a Fossil. Cheaper watch brands like this provide a gateway for someone to catch the watch bug.

Exactly, most WIS I know went from something like Invicta to Tag to Breitling to Rolex.

Totally agreed, James Bond made me aspire to own a Rolex since I was single digits, but timex and fossil made watches to satiate my interest until I could pursue real watches. Many legitimate collectors seem to start this way.

Agreed. I owned one Tag that I bought in 1999. While chanel surfing late one night around 2008, I happened upon SHOPNBC and saw Invicta and Renato watches. The early Renato watches are very cool and have unique designs. I caught the watch bug and bought a few Invictas and about 4 Renatos. Still have them all and they get some wrist time occasionally. My SS ceramic GMT 166710LN steals most of my wrist time.
