Haven’t you seen the movie “Terminator?” The machines will rise against us. Pretty sure my toaster will be the one that kills me in my sleep.

It's always the toaster, watch out for the toasters!

Standing in the kitchen talking about the rise of the machines, I laughed, my girlfriend laughed, the toaster laughed.....I shot the toaster.

Poor toaster! It only wanted to toast you.

The AI you are seeing is probably 10+ years old. Just being rolled out now.

Reason why bitcoin is so valuable is because YES it can be hacked by a quantum computer (those are good at running/solving problems).

the reason it won't be hacked is because once it is hacked we can see the tech they are using/reverse engineer it and essentially build a better blockchain.

that would ruin years of research/work. its big game of cat/mouse

Keep the Crown Vic Chad, it will never be influenced by those evil smart devices the way a German luxury car will be.

We will never improve the human race beyond a certain point without the help of AI. I forget who said it, but we will not have really ground breaking machines until machines are smart enough to build other machines.

IBM Watson is better than a panel of cancer experts at identifying therapeutic options for tumors. In addition to identifying genetic alterations in 703 cases that the panel identified, Watson identified potential therapeutic options in 323 more patients that the experts reviewed but did not find.

I haven’t seen that movie so don’t spoil it! :-).

But seriously, we’re all done. It’s going to happen (machines taking over) sooner than we think.

So on one side we have Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Stephen Hawking... and on the other side, an EU bureaucrat named Carlos who wants to censor online news

Artificial intelligence will be weaponized like all technology and once synchronicity is reached it’s just a matter of time before humans are eradicated.

Unfortunately robotics will happen before that and in the next 30 years over half the jobs people do will be eliminated. And that’s just not menial jobs but highly technical ones as well.

Throw in the mass migrations and upheavals due to climate change and it ain’t gonna be pretty.

Anti avoidance has been around for number of years that gives a small safety barrier for use on our shipping industry.

My own goal was to put in place a total automated ships avoidance device operating on 75% A.I by 2020 unfortunately we failed as human input is still needed.

The basic system works well to alert crew of possible collision & will act to avoid the obstruction if no human input has been made, But still fails on muti use shipping lanes and land mass.

So more work is still needed to make this A.I system a fail safe one.

We are still quite a few years away from total anti collision marine system but our work has seen far better avoidance software system without the need of human input.

Will we get there well only time will tell & the benefits-risks-of-artificial-intelligence will still be debated for years to come.

When I worked on automated avoidance systems for cars we just used DSRC and GPS to configure a car into a 3d box. Then we had them interacting with other cars through Computer. I guess the biggest problem converting the technology with ships would be the size, and the fact that I’m guessing shipping lanes change unlike roadways. idk how far you need to change course, but I imagine you’d need more than a KM which is generally the maximum range for a dedicated short wave communications antenna. Auto avoidance is also a bit easier than ships since you generally just need to get the car to stop instead of actively avoid something. Better step it into high gear though, after the press release of the automated semi from Tesla, I don’t see why they couldn’t fairly easily adapt their systems to ships as well if they really wanted too.

Thank you for your comments. Your quite right size and mass is our biggest problem our work has input from many companies dealing with this including shared data both ways to assist our own development including Auto technology

We are using multi bands via radar pulse and advanced miro technology with 360* with mid range scanning. All this new technology is working alongside the ships own high Tec nav system. But it's still down to mass as you can imagine a large vessel takes time to change to a new heading to avoid the tracked target. Stopping if needed is a completely different problem altogether as most will need around 2 miles or more...

We will succeeded. Our own parliament has pledged more funding into advanced AI but success will come from a group venture...

Regards

Lord Woodford

I've sailed the Tasman Sea at night time and seen huge empty tankers bearing down on us at frightfully great speed. All you can do is scramble to hopefully avoid a collision. Because you can only presume that there is nobody at the helm of the tanker looking out for a 45 foot yacht under sail.

I appreciate your efforts in this field of research.

I have done work in artificial intelligence professionally. Deep learning is a very impressive technology for the convolution networks we know about. If we get enough horsepower to have deep learning systems build convolution networks to train for specific problems then we'll really have something. I think that's quite a ways off.

Only observation I have is: human intelligence hasn’t been doing a bang up job of late. Maybe it’s getting time to give "someone" else a chance.

Still, I am reminded of a coin my father left to me when contemplating the future and issues like this. One side: you lose; Other side: I win. Either way, humans have an uphill struggle against the "coin".

Brilliant quote with very valid points many could learn from.

Plus we are always open to suggestions.
